For the hands I located a seller in England selling a set of NOS hands and from the scans the color looked close. I sent the funds and crossed my fingers they were real and matched. They are indeed tritium NOS hands and by luck the color is spot on. Was surprised and thrilled how well they worked out.

When I inherited the watch in 1988 there was no pearl in the bezel. I wanted a vintage correct pearl and was able to source one from Vitaly who posts often on the forum. He was great to purchase from and pearl worked out great as well.
Excellent read and very touching story. IMHO, you might want to keep the original hands in a safe location within a foam lined container and probably label it too. Personally, unavoidable oxidation and bubbling shows great character, depth, history and a life well travelled. Much like the mini stress points on the dial, each telling it’s own tale. Who knows, one day your daughter might want to revert great grandpa’s watch to its original spec!

Agreed on hands. They were on the watch up until 15 years ago. They are stabilized and safely stored. Lume on them is without cracks and darker than dial lume. The metal portion of each hand is evenly but completely oxidized. Both the hands and dial have that green glow typical of gilt era pieces.

Under a 10x loupe the dial has a really pretty pattern of tiny Spyder web cracks.

Interesting and very touching story. My father passed last year and I think of him daily. (We were very close.) The bond between father and son is special indeed.

Your father was an impressive man! I'm sure he'd be very proud of you as you seem to have accomplished some great things in life. (Career, beautiful little girl, etc.) Most of all, you seem humble and sensitive which, to me, are very admirable personality traits.

Thank you for your heartfelt post and enjoy that ultra-heirloom in the best of health.

Oh yeah, that Porsche 911 is wicked-cool.

Best,
Mark

I don't visit these forums as much as I'd like to but when I do it warms my heart and touches my soul to read wonderful, real, raw, personal stories such as these. Thank for sharing it with us. One of THE best threads I've had the pleasure of reading and one that helps explain and almost perfectly encapsulates why we fall in love with these amazing timepieces. Someday my son will inherit my small, modest collection of vintage Rolexes and the birth year Speedy I got for him when he was born 7 years ago. My only hope is that he can remember me as fondly and lovingly as you remember your father.

Thank you

All of the kind words and feedback have been appreciated. I am sure this will all help my daughter better understand the connection to my father that this watch provides.

Phillip just installed an extra link on the 7206 rivet bracelet and the fit is much improved. Amazing how differently this watch looks and feels on the correct rivet vs the later 93150.

Went for a drive

Finally a break in the rain so took the 5513 for a quick ride. Carbs gum up if I don't run it at least every few weeks. The watch is 7 years older than 911.

Very much enjoyed reading this story - thanks very much. I've rationalized a few watch purchases over the years by telling myself that I'll pass them down to my son when he's older ... nice to get a sense of a son's appreciation! :)

Mines summer yellow, only used for one year on the 944/924S. The sunset works perfectly with it.
