Pronouncing Patek
Yes, dumbest question ever. As Don Adams would say, "Sorry about that chief!"
When I hear Patek Philippe pronounced, usually it seems different depending on whether one is saying "Patek" or "Patek Philippe." "Patek Philippe" seems to be pronounced in a French way, "Pah-tek" with the accent on "tek." But when saying "Patek" for short, it seems like people frequently say, "Pa-dick" with the accent on the "Pa." Is this my imagination?

I've heard TS pronounce it with a hard T and Frasier with soft T. We should ask some Polish people.

probably the best answer. In french it's said slightly different than how a lot of native english speakers say it for the most part and maybe neither are right.

Do a search on Youtube and listen to an interview with Thierry Stern. I pronounce it the way he pronounces it.

I would say the number of sleepless nights I have had wondering how to pronounce a watch that I don’t own I could count on two hands. Maybe even one hand!

just quote reference numbers at your AD. Then you will sound smart and won't risk looking like an idiot mispronouncing a brand name.

That’s a whole new can of worms! Is it the 5-7-11, or 57-11, or any other combo? I’d go 5-7-11, but on the other hand I’d go 59-80.

this seems similar. Its how i hear it said a lot. https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/vi...-matt-jacobson starting at 4:25. He says it several times Thats the way its always said when i notice it on any episode of talking watches no matter who the collector is. I don't say it that way though, i say it the other way.

So you are telling me that when i say "do you have any five thousand seven hundred eleven's in stock" I'm doing it wrong? No wonder why they always say no.

after every brand you can click on the speaker to hear how you should pronounce it
https://www.worthy.com/watch-pronunciation-guide I speak German and French so this helps :-) cause the site I referred too is not always correct Blancpain for example ... they pronounce the 'C' while in fact you don't have to pronounce the 'C' .. you should say blanpain

I often hear Pa-tech. I'll have to admit that I still giggle a little bit when people say "pee-pee" for short.
In terms of the number references I would say 57-11 or 57-12. However in French I would say "cinq mille sept cent onze" or "five thousand seven hundred eleven" |

You can get away with it with AP for those not comfortable saying Audemars Piguet. Pee pee (P.P.) just doesn't work at all in verbal communication.

Interesting. When I was at the AD in Montreal they referred to it as "cinq mille sept cent onze", and I've seen Thierry Stern also say it that way.
Believe it or not, at least in HK I've heard quite a few people (especially dealers) refer to Patek as "P.P." in conversation. It's not any less funny to me at least when mixed in with Cantonese. |

My wife's parents are both Polish and she's 100% fluent. She says it more along the lines of 'pah teck' with emphasis on the latter half. However 'patek' is not a common Polish word, nor last name.
Nonetheless, her pronunciation sounds much more fluid (and nicer) with her accent, than I do with my American tongue. Franciszek Czapek (Patek's original partner) on the other hand......this sounds definitively more Polish to me. |
