Not a new dial but here is my 1950’s Explorer it had its dial, hands and case back changed in 1961, that’s when the Royal Navy was concerned with Radium, the serial puts it with other Navy watches so it’s civilianised

Me too and way better than a vintage dial IMHO No worries about the valuable lume falling to pieces in a few years time. This dial was made using modern manufacturing processes.

She said yes, they are special order only from the rolex HQ and have a 6 to 8 week lead time to get in, and they only exchange red for red period. Your original red is sent to rolex HQ in Switzerland for Authentication, they then in return send a red service dial...

Even though I was able to prove my white dial 1680 was in the serial number range and date that it originally had a red dial, they don't care. Red for RED.

only advise is purchasing a ruined and destroyed red dial for a grand and throw it in your watch, then send it in to rolex for service and request a new service red dial to be special ordered.. The red service dials are not really seen because no one in their right mind wants to replace a red tritium for a service lume red dial. unless they don't know any better of course.

so people at Rolex Texas just don't know.. but I recently raised such a stink, that they are all informed now that they do exist and not to feed customers false information because of their lack of knowledge.

I find that red service dial 1680's tend to sell for 1k more than a standard 1680 white service dial watches when they pop up for sale.

Nice work!

The seller for this luminova red dial is asking 21k.

What do you all think a realistic price for this watch would be?

Yes. Apparently, the original owner’s watchmaker had a Rolex parr’s account and switched the original hands out in 2002 with luminova ones so he could see them better at night. Before the watch came my way the original hands were put back on the watch earlier this year. Prob why they have aged a bit differently. It’s my understanding that the hands aging a bit slower is pretty common anyway.

Restoration like replacement dials and hands or bezels are only ok if you don’t plan on selling the watch. Most collectors will not value these and selling prices will reflect a significantly lower price as compared to original parts.

Great thread! I too want a 'new' vintage sub! Glad I'm not alone in my desires! 1973 5512 with bright green hands and dots and pearl might be my grail :)

Oh my, that is a beautiful time piece! Here is mine!

How did you come to own yours Storky? I wonder just how many 1680's there are with this dial configuration? A few hundred? less?

Thanks!
I bought the watch it as it is a while back.... but eBay believe it or not(!) I’d been looking for a long time (years) Saw it and the seller lived 30mins away, I think it was meant to be!
I did lots of research regarding the service dials when I was looking, but I believe that there are probably a only a few hundred or less. Certainly a small fraction of all the original Red Subs out there. There’s hardly any of them posted on Instagram.
Mine has a ‘Red Sub serial’ and am confident that it hasn’t been just added....
The insert (Luminova pearl) has gone a blue-ish colour, who knows - they are so simple to change.
Years ago we used to throw away the faded ones for something nice and new!!!!

Awesome. Yeah I do love mine also. I created another thread a few days ago. I was actually offered a white gold daytona for my red sub. I dont know how much you paid for yours, but the prices seem to have jumped a little also. Did you purchase yours recently?

https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=692102

I actually collect photos of other peoples red subs with luminova dials and I think I have only found around twenty clearly different watches spanning over 15 years. That includes this forum, social media, google searches etc. There are not many of these watches out there.

The service red dials are pretty rare now, there is a 1680 on ebay at the moment with a service dial installed. The seller is asking for a science fiction price though. Still, nice to see one out there.

I’ve been really enjoying my 1680 white with Tritium marked service dial! While I appreciate an original tritium dial, I get a similar look with modern lume material that should hold up for decades (for less $), heck, it’s still made by Rolex! Love the matte dial with crisp white plots, proportions, weight, Plexi, and brushed silver date disc!

I must admit, I like old models like the Oyster Precision Manuals because of their slim case and comfort but if I get another one again it will go back to RSC and have new Dial, hands and clasp. I’d like it to look newer rather than aged. Each to their own though - enjoy what you enjoy chaps!

My 1953 6202 Turnograph with a lovely early 1960s glossy Tritium service dial and hands. The original owner was very concerned about Radium so he sent it back at the first opportunity to have them swapped out. Love the fact that it means the dial looks vintage but spotless, unlike most Radium dials that don’t wear their age so well, unless you love lots of patina.
