Can somebody explain this?

It certainly looks cool, but how do you actually use the metrics in the back of a watch? Please give a good example.

To convert Km/h to mph for example:
look at the 50 on the Km/h line
the graduations directly above it are the mph equivalent
so 50 Km/h = 31mph

These are units conversion "tables". If you know a measurement in one units system you can easily get the corresponding in the other units system by checking the other side of the line.
