Buying my 16610 LV for 4700, buying an F series Pepsi GMT in mint condition for 3500 and buying a Subc in mint condition for 5,000(divorce sale). Wished I had bought a Rolex 6263 for 25,000 4 years ago, kicking myself about it.

Bought my 16710 for a little over $5k just before Rolex released the 116719BLRO. Resale prices have been rising to insane levels ever since.

I don't ever plan on selling but it's nice to know it's appreciating.

For me, it was exercising patience. Once I got the itch to get my first Rolex, I was all over the place. I almost bought a Rolex on ebay with a non-factory dial. Then I almost bought a watch that was way too small. Then I almost bought the right watch with the wrong bezel/band combo. Each time I almost bought my selection, I was convinced it was THE one, but after exercising patience and doing much research here, I got the Rolex I truly wanted, and would have been very disappointed with any of my "almost" purchases.

I hear you, John. This is probably the smartest thing I've done too

A very smart move was me getting rid of my BLNR. It wasn't getting any love from me so it's now on the wrist of someone who is no doubt loving it. I'm happy, the buyer is happy and the watch is being loved. The proceeds of the sale allowed me to buy the reference I should have bought in the first place. Job done.

Not buying on credit.
Only buying after all financial obligations have been met each month and the purchase did not, in any way, impact my retirement savings plan.

Just about anyone can buy a Rolex every two to three years, if they've a mind to, if they plan ahead and save.

Realizing that having 3 Rolexes is a blessing, and that I don't "need" a 4th one.

Not ruling out eBay. Single best thing I've ever done.

I doubt this is very smart, but the event that's led to the most enjoyment is I stopped fighting myself over it, telling myself it's a colossal waste of money, caring what others might think, etc. So much more rewarding since then.

Haha yup this ^^^^^

After I sold my house in Miami Beach in 2015, I bought a Subc from a trusted member from here, and still 2 years later I love looking at it. I truly love watches, but I only own one, but I must admit, I love reading the rolling hills of the TRF members stories. Whether rich or poor, we all have something in common one way or another. Enjoy your watches.... this is the smartest thing ive done in watch collecting.

What Is the Smartest Thing You've Done in Your Watch Collecting?

Getting over the stupid idea that, even though a Rolex Sub has been my ideal watch since I was a little kid when I watched Connery looking at his with a lighter in Goldfinger, I would never buy a Rolex because of the negative connotations around the brand (e.g., my relatives or old high school friends would think I was a wanna-be 1980s douche trying to show off that I had money if I wore one). Kind of embarrassing that I let that dictate my decision on which watch to buy, but this is an anonymous forum so I can let all my shame hang out (-;

Joining this forum. Everyone is very welcoming and polite here, it is a breath of fresh air from most of the online world. I also used information gained here to buy my first Tudor at a great price and condition. Though this place also has me already eyeing my next purchase!

Focusing on buying to keep. The flipping game becomes very expensive after a while.

A) Buying pre owned, especially around 2008
B) Buying what I wanted, not what people on forums would rather I wanted.
I collect for interest not profit, but when I do make a mistake, I like it to be as least costly as possible....

Before joining the forum , I thought I must be the only one who constantly flips watches .And I was never completely happy with any purchase, once the satisfaction of owning the watch wore off . And best thing about joining this Forum is ,I now know I am not alone . Thanks everyone

1. Buying my first Seiko mechanical diver vs. Armani watch. This got me into watches
2. Saving and buying first Sub. This got me into Rolex.
3. Getting first Panerai
4. Still having my first mechanical watch in working condition ready for wrist action.
5. Joining forum and getting to know you folks.
