Opinions needed on a watch to give to my son one day

This is my first post on this forum. I've been lurking for a while, but decided to register an account and begin posting. Just want to say how great this community is from what I've been able to tell, and I'm looking forward to spending more time here.

To make a long story short, over the past couple of years I've really gotten into watches as a hobby -- buying/selling, researching, learning the history, you name it. After going through many Seiko-level watches, and even a couple of entry level luxury pieces (Christopher Ward and Stowa), I've decided to become a one watch guy. Naturally, after much research, Rolex fits the bill perfectly. My wife and I have a son that just turned 3, and I'd love to have one watch that I wear 24/7 and can give to him down the road at the right time, perhaps a college graduation or wedding gift.

With that said, I've narrowed it down to two choices, a 114060 or BLNR. My head says 114060 because it's arguably the most iconic, timeless watch out there. It's versatile - perfect for nearly every occasion, and now particularly with the ceramic bezel is built to last. Such a great piece. But my heart is torn and leaning toward the BLNR. I just can't get over how beautiful it is. The blue is the absolute perfect shade and it's probably the sexiest watch I've seen.

I feel like the 114060 should be the choice here given its versatility, but can't quite get away from how much I like the BLNR. Edit: I just re-read this post and I don't want this to sound like I don't like the 114060, and feel obligated to buy it. It's a gorgeous watch in its own right, just perhaps a tad more of a safe choice than the BLNR.

So, with that long-winded rambling (sorry guys, not a good first impresesion haha), does anyone here have any advice, or maybe gone through a similar decision?

I appreciate any thoughts/help/comments.

You are overthinking it. The watch that will mean the most to your son is the watch that he saw you wearing throughout his life. Don't buy the watch that you think he will like, buy the watch that you like. This is the watch that will mean the most to him.

Hard to debate this..and it sounds like you're more or less decided as well from the post. Congrats in advance to you and your son.

Every Rolex I bought that would have been handed down to my son has either been traded or sold and on it's way to someone else's son.

Although, there is one... that I do plan on handing down to him... my Explorer II 216570 which I won't part with ever.

Both see great choices. Have you considered a Sub Date? I’d go BLNR.

I'd go with the BLNR. It will always be a standout piece.

Very very well said. To the OP, I was very grateful and fortunate to be gifted my dad's Pepsi (the day I graduated from high school, he took it off his wrist and handed it to me). It wasn't the watch itself, but the gesture and the thought of my dad when I look at the watch that brings me the most joy... Could have been any watch really when I think about it, and I would have felt the same way!

I also agree wholeheartedly with @Kevin of Larchmont. You simply can't predict what your son will appreciate stylistically 20+ years from now. Purchase the watch that speaks to You. Years from now when you pass along the watch it will be much more impactful and symbolically long lasting.

I can't see how anyone of sound mind could disagree with this. Very well written

Opinions needed on a watch to give to my son one day

Welcome aboard OP. Funny how I started in this forum about a year or so ago with exact same question. :)

I bought the BLNR 'for him', but later when I bought the LV, he loved it and says he wants it when he grows up.

So yeah, but what you want and hopefully he will like it when he gets to have it.

Chaps

This is a very rare but refreshing bit of common sense and really good advice.

This should be made a sticky that can be readily accessed when similar threads are bombarded with the usual one word replies such as DJ2, Sub etc when recommending what to buy for a son in twenty years time.

Regards

Mick

YM1 Platinum 16622 or 116622 with platinum dial. The platinum dial has been discontinued which makes it better. You can get one for under 5k. This watch is universal and also classy.

You should buy both and start working on giving that boy a brother.

I'd say both are great. Rolex is a solid choice for longevity. A few quick thoughts for you to ponder:

Your younger than me based on having a 3 year old..... and I'd say the possibility of more kids is in play.

Maybe this one watch idea is good for now, but what about owning two...you wear both plenty...then when you give one away at his wedding...you still have another to give him when you pass on. He will very much appreciate the one you give him at his wedding, and when you pass on maybe that next watch will help him through the sadness.

I appreciate all of the thoughts and comments here. Kevin of Larchmont really did a particularly great job of putting things into perspective. Hard to make a wrong choice between those two watches -- not only are they great timepieces, but what really matters is the relationship with my son.

One last question -- am I correct in assuming that both watches are tough as nails and built to last a lifetime?

Let us hope all the utopian views expressed here come to fruition.

He may well dislike watches and flog it.

Then you missed the point, his father gave him something of value to do with as he chose.

Reading this thread made me think of the Patek Philippe slogan: "You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation."

My father died 8-years ago today. Even though I don't think about him every day, I still miss him. I have a few things that belonged to him and they are very meaningful to me, simply because they remind me of him.

Whichever watch you choose will be a good choice.
