Is there a "Standard" Rolex?

I am new to the forum and I would bet this topic may have been covered prior, but it seems like the standard Rolex if there is such a thing is the SS Sub. What I mean by this is it seems a good number of folk's collections include this model, also it has been my experience that folks that only own one or two Rolex watches start out with this model. Anyone else notice this or am I crazy?

I’d say it’s probably a datejust - if there is such a thing

I somewhat agree. Years ago when I bought my first Rolex (late 80s) It seemed like 9 out of 10 folks I saw with a Rolex had two toned datejusts with champagne dials.

Is there a "Standard" Rolex?

The Submariner is one of the most popular models among enthusiasts and the general public alike. It's been around for well over 50 years and played a major role in defining the dive watch category. Among watch enthusiasts in general, not just Rolex enthusiasts, it is a staple of collections and watch discussions.

The Datejust is also a quintessential Rolex and very popular. It can and has been debated which is the more quintessential. Standard, though, is probably not quite the right word.

The sub is as ubiquitous as the the name Rolex. It's the most iconic n the most copied watch in the world. Even the homage watch of the design is collectible, believe it or not.

I blame it on the autoconnect.

Datejust.

Been around for 70 years for a reason; it's Rolex's bread-and-butter best seller, and the most likely model you'll find if someone owns 1 Rolex.

If by "folks" you include 1/2 the world's population (and why wouldn't you), women, then for every occasional Sub (or Daytona, or GMT) you see a woman wearing there will be 50,000 Lady DJs out there. It's Rolex's best-selling model, men's models included.

One of the reason I bought gmt is because every other wrist had a sub. I used to work in NYC financial district then.

Agree with others, Sub or DJ. Personally prefer the Sub no date, plus it can be worn with metal bracelet for a more formal look, or you can get a variety of aftermarket straps such as the popular offerings from Everest and Rubber B for casual / sport wear appeal.

Is there a "Standard" Rolex?

In the US I'd go with the Sub or DJ but it's close with the DD right there. Think with the older generation passing on the DD has been Handed down quite a lot. I know there were 7-8 of my fraternity brothers at Alabama that had 36mm DDs. The rest of the world the DJ and DD right there too seems to be the king from what I've seen

What is "standard"?
People have similarly asked "What is the entry level Rolex"
In a range of watches there really is no such thing in either standard or entry level.

It is often said that the Date-Just is the most sold model, but I don't know of any official statistic to back that up.

I think a lot of it has to do with the age that you get involved. I think that typically the younger guys go for the Submariners, especially in the U.S. If a little older then the Date Just is in play. Many of my friends also started with one and then added the other for a very workable two watch collection.
