Modern Iconic Watches

They are in the WIS world but I’d insert a Daytona over the 1 to really nail home the topic. Real nice though!

Something like this

Tremendous duo that often comes to mind when thinking about modern classics. Not the full list, but on the list

I’d say Sub, 15202,5711, daytona and Speedy are the icons. Sadly other than a lvc, I don’t have any of them.

I’d say a Submariner would qualify as well

Very nice. That Lange is not for me though and would not put it in the same category to a nautilus in terms of "forever design."

For sure, with the 15202, they have very distinctive and iconic looks.

im going to go in a different direction here. The 5711, daytona's, subs, etc are iconic but not modern iconic. They are very similar to the design of the originals that are at least four decades old.

For modern iconic I am going to say the aquanaut. Its on rubber (modern idea), classic styling yet a different design entirely than a Nautilus. It was very different when it was first released and has become very recognizable. To me thats the definition of a modern iconic watch.

Aquanaut's popularity has definitely spiked this year after many years of being in the background. A lot of the of the old school icons spent many years under appreciated until the general public caught on to their charms. The aquanaut's time has finally come.

Depends on your definition of modern, but I'd say for "recent" modern the 5711, 15202. Going back before those another 20ish years, I'd go with Speedmaster Hesalite, Submariner, GMT, Daytona.

I agree on the 5711.

I wouldn’t consider the Lange at all iconic, at least not in the top 10. A datograph possibly.

Agree with the list. Would probably add a Cartier in there too.

That’s a good argument. However a Daytona 116500, for example, is a very different beast to a vintage Daytona, although the heritage is clear. I’d still class it as a modern classic.

Finding a truly modern watch, with an original design, that we could call a modern classic is tricky as iconic status is not reached overnight. I agree the 5167 probably meets that definition. I’d also add the 5070. Also, reluctantly the AP ROO.

As far as future classics go, if I were a betting man, the 5524 has potential.

The proud tradition of Patek pilot watches being restored starting with the 5524 and then realized with the steel case that collectors asked for. The timeless design and readability of the dial makes for a combination that many would consider to be truly iconic.

A watch to be iconic needs to have history in the market ( tried , test it and survived) , like Daytona , Speedy, 15202 , 5711... etc

It's really more the 5164 and like the 5712 they have both risen to prominence recently over their simpler brothers and not just due to availability.

I personally think the 5524 has a better chance than the 5522 of becoming iconic. As you said, it was the first modern Patek to restore that tradition.

How to define Modern Iconic is up to each one of us. I personally think it should be release within the pass 20-30 years and has a reputation among collectors. It has to standout from peers and set the trend instead of following. Both Lange 1 and 5711 deserve to be named modern iconic.
