Question on 5164A
I am a one watch guy (Smurf) but am getting the itch for one more watch and am thinking of a GMT type watch.
Question: I have never owned a GMT. Is the travel time feature easy to use, easier or harder than a Rolex GMT. I am leaning toward a Patek as it would be my first, Also, is availability from an AD difficult or do I go grey? Thanks in advance. |

For a GMT I think the 5164 is about as easy as it gets, much more than a Rolex. Just two pushers to move time forwards or backwards an hour at a time. And then you have two hands for the hours and two day/night indicators, one for each hand/timezone.

The Patek is easier to use but that's kind of where the cost premium comes in. They've engineered the watch so these things can be easily changed, and that generally takes a lot more effort.

Thanks, baglady. It is the Patek or the WG Pepsi with a meteorite dial, and ease of use makes the 5164 my next "object of desire." I have to keep up with you after all.

I want the 5164R, though, partly out of a sincere belief that I shouldn't spend so much on a stainless steel watch.

Yeah, the prices are not that different between gold and SS plain jane Aquas, I haven't checked on the 5164.
Speaking of which, is this reference hard to get from an AD? I live near an AD and they know me, but am out of town at the moment. |

Oh yea it’s very very hard to get, you definitely need a great relationship with your AD. Gold is also hard, but steel in particular. |

i have both, the rolex GMT WG blue dial and the 5164A and prefer the rolex. it turns out that the rolex has an unbeatable wrist presence which the aqua just cannot match. in my book the 5164R is nicer than the A.

I don't like gold metal tones, only silver tones, which is why I tend to wear SS, WG, or platinum.

IMO Patek GMT's are by far the best and most functional!

Very hard, although the Rose Gold is easier than the SS to get. So far, I've tried the following ADs/Salons with no cigar: 1) London 2) Paris 3) Tel Aviv 4) Florence 5) Houston (they had one, but it was spoken for) 6) Burlingame/Bay Area although they did have a highly blinged out Nautilus for sale I'm eating at El Cellar next month and there's an AD in Girona that I'll check out. Will do Barcelona just because I'll be in the city. I'm not as fussed about it taking time. I think the hunt is fun. |

The meteorite dial is fairly hard to read and illegible most of the time. You definitely need to see it in person.

Super easy to use John as the guys say. If you can get one at retail its a no brainer, if paying a premium its a thinker, prices will probably fall as the Nauts and 5167 are falling from a summer peak.

Thanks guys for the responses. On the meteor dial, I once owned a Daytona with meteorite dial - traded for the Platona - and I could read the dial. But it is harder than a solid dial.

I agree that the 5164 is undoubtedly easier to read/use than the Rolex GMTs. I’ll also add that the rubber straps are super comfortable and light which makes it almost unbeatable as a daily. One thing to consider maybe your daily dress code. I personally (now) think it looks good with a suit too, but it took me a while to get there, and others find it too casual. Good luck sourcing one!

I'm retired so dress code is casual. I am looking forward to buying my first rubber strap watch.

Impossible to get from a dealer unless you have a special relationship. Gray market prices are almost 2X retail price, which is insane.
Also, as cool as the 5164 is, you should know that it is a scratch magnet (like the Nautilus and Royal Oak). Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

It's a travel time watch and incredible easy to use ... and probably the most easiest second time zone to read. It's very lightweight and flies under the radar, pure stealth wealth. No one will think you're wearing a stupid expensive timepiece but it's a great conversation starter with those in the know.
