36mm vs 39mm Explorer? 7.25” wrist…

Hello all, quick question and want to get opinions here. I’m currently torn bw trying to pick up a 36mm older Explorer I or the 39mm version. I have a 7.25” wrist that sometimes swells up a bit. I normally wear a 40mm dead dweller and the newer 43mm SD as well as my speedy. All “largish” watches. I’ve tried for comparison my wife’s 36mm Datejust but I’m not sure it would wear the same or is a fair comparison.

Any thoughts or pics here (closer wrist shots) or longer mirror shots to get a sense of how it would wear for me? Thanks y’all!

My wrist is 7,5 inch, flat top. I have both 36mm (14270) and 39 (214270 Mk II). The 14270 has a classic size, in 36mm it has the old school field watch vibe. I was attracted by the tritium dial/patina and lug holes on the case.

No wrong choice here, it is matter of your personal preference.

Definitely a 39 with your wrist size - mine is 6.75 inch and I find 39mm is spot on for me. At the end of the day though it is down to what you think and want.

I had a 36mm with a flat 6.7 inch wrist size, looked just right for me. I think definitely 39mm for you.

At 7.25, you can pull off either so just comes down to personal preference and how it feels on your wrist .

I'd go 36, simply because I believe that the Explorer I was meant to be a 36mm watch. Looks inflated and proportionally off at 39, IMO.

My opinion would be 36 or, if you find the 36 too small, then go with an older OP39 or current OP41.

The 39 is my choice. I have a 7.0 inch wrist. I tried on the 36 and found it too small.

Nice first post! Opinions will abound! Mine? Go for the 39. But you probably already knew that.

The 36 looks perfect on you. It's meant to be a tough and discreet field watch, not some monstrous glittering pizza wheel.

I will say 39mm!!!

214270 39mm on 6.5 wrist vs. 124270 36mm on 5.3 wrist

124270 36mm on 6.5 wrist

39mm is the way to go for me, and I don't have a thick wrist. I also do have a 1016 and appreciate the 36mm for that vintage look, but for modern, it's the 214270.

I have the same size wrist as you , and I have the 214270. It works well, however the 36 mm can work also just a question of preference.

anything under 7.5, zero question 36. 39 won't be ugly but the 36. Even up to 8" I'd say there's a choice but the right choice would still be the 36. 8+... yeah I get it... Just don't even get an explorer and daily an SD.

I bought the new 36mm and it took me over a week to understand it. Now I love it.
I've tried the 39mm in the past and I agree the proportions are a little off, the Explorer was always meant to be a 36mm watch.

Rolex should have just made it 37.5mm though people would still not be happy.

I think with your wrist size you could go with 36 or 39. 36 being the traditional sizing will look smaller compared to todays watches but isn't ridiculous for your wrist to wear a 36. If your wrist were greater than that I would just say 39 or larger only.

39mm! To all of the all the high and mighty posters critiquing the 39mm dimensions as a dinner plate and pizza slicer you need to understand that to some of us with the 36mm on a 7 inch wrist you look like Tom Selleck from Three Men and a Baby.

Yes indeed I am forecasting buyers remorse for the 36mm ex on 7 inch plus wrist. Just call me Nostradum%# :)

39mm on my 7.25 wrist. I wouldn't want a smaller watch unless it was a pure dress watch.

This looks like JUMBO explorer to me. It's too big.

Looks perfect imo. You are spot on. I’d say you can wear a 42mm comfortably.
