Anyone else cringe a little when people post a social media watch "Flex"
Anyone else cringe a little when someone posts a steering wheel with watch or similar social media "flex"? I feel like it contributes to the rich jerk stigma that unfortunately goes with Rolexes. I think it also makes it so obvious that the poster is more interested in the $$/status vibe than the actual watch.
IDK - what do people think? |

Yeah. It’s sad that people feel the need to flaunt material things to try to receive compliments from others. For the most part I don’t follow people that do this. Besides some grey dealers, but they’re trying to sell a lifestyle so I get why they do it.

Based on how Rolex seems to be positioning the brand, charging $10k retail for what they still label a “professional” dive watch (IF you can get one at retail), do you have any reason to believe what you call the “rich jerk stigma” isn’t exactly the image that Rolex wants to project now?

Flexing is mildly annoying. Humble bragging is supremely annoying. Both are integral to social media.

I don't have any issue with people posting such. Some are just into hobbies, not necessarily showing off to the masses, but rather other enthusiasts. Social Media in general though is largely a waste of time and brain cells imo.

I guess that's what TRF is for, at least given the daily WRUW posts, etc. If not here, then where?

I have my IG tailored to only show certain brands (mostly Seiko) and certain users, so I rarely see much flexing. If I do, I can just block the flexer. Consequently, almost all the flexing I see is on TRF. If you just want to see people sharing watch pics for the love of the hobby, IG is the best place, IMO. But you have to set it up right. It's also a lot more civil than here, too.

Adam makes some good points above!
I can add one more, stay OFF social media!! You'll feel a lot better.. I actually culled all accounts on that medium, and limit my exposure to TRF only, that way I only deal with the sickness of watches. Everything else is just noise. Worry about what is important in life, health and immediate family.

Perhaps there is a translation in here somewhere for those that want to understand what is being discussed about posting pictures of watches?

Anyone else cringe a little when people post a social media watch "Flex"
It’s all good when you ask for the picture though? Or when you decide to “flex” yourself? Please explain the difference between flexing and just taking a picture of ones watch. I don’t understand. Did I flex taking a picture with the steering wheel of my $450 BMW? Essentially it meets your standards of a picture of a Rolex in front of a steering wheel. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I mean.....come on, the fact we all take wrist shots of $5k-$100k watches in the snow, on the beach, with our car, with our steaks, with our cigars, with our beers, with our friends mother’s relatives friends with Rolexes.....these are all flexs.....especially when most people in America don’t have $2k in the bank even.
I mean, it’s a watch. I wear watches maybe 10 times per year total. The off topic forum is the crown jewel of this entire site, I think most of us realize that. I just don’t see what people can post about in the watch section of the site after a month or two as you will have seen every single topic that can be started in that timeframe and nothing new actually is talked about unless Basel is happening. |

Social media is designed as a flex.
Look what I have....look how crazy I am.....look how smart I am.......look how beautiful I am.....look a UFO....... It's all flex.

I dont cringe, but it does get repetitive and boring to see the 'C*ck' fest and bench race mentality of many watch 'PURCHASERS'...
I mean, how many yacht owners can there possibly be... |

Another thread bashing social media, yet here we are on a social media platform, with much "flexing," nonetheless. Too funny. |

Social media showing expensive “things” like Rolex, sports cars, boats, houses, etc is total garbage. Most of these posts share no information, review, opinion about said thing. Only a flex to show the world “I have it” and many with a price. It’s all ego.
When I see this, I just think to myself what a hollow and garbage person must be posting this. I’ve never posted any of my “things” on social media. Flexing is for narcissistic fools who have yet to grow out of that phase of life. <end rant> Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

The pot calling the kettle black.
An internet forum is a form of social media and all of the incoming & WRUW images are a form of flex... |
