Everything going up, including vintage. Is this worth it?

Hey guys. First off I hope I am not breaking any rules as I am not in possession of this watch. My brother is simply looking for a first Rolex, and I came across this piece and he likes it. The seller is asking $5750 Watch only.

If this breaks any rules, please by all means remove the post.

That being said, It’s very easy to get an idea of pricing on modern pieces but being it’s much harder on older pieces I don’t really know if I should have my brother go along with the purchase.

I know these 36s are not popular anymore, especially being vintage. My first watch was actually a stainless 36 and it got me hooked on Rolex. (Now I have a TT skyD but let me not steer off topic.)

I’m sure the watch has been polished numerous times in its life(and was said to be just serviced this past February) but overall I think it’s a pretty nice first watch. My brother loves 2 tones and always primarily wore Movados. This is obviously a step up for him but at the same time he doesn’t want to jump right into a 13k datejust 41.

Anyway, what are your thoughts on this particular watch at this price with no papers? I was thinking 5k would be a reasonable offer. Or should I tell him to just keep saving. Thanks in advance.

Bracelet is pretty stretched, but can be restored by Rolliworks (perhaps about $800- $1k ?). Otherwise looks good. Reputable seller?

Who told you that?

You could buy 36mm Datejusts for 2-3k, now they are already at 5-6k usd. You're way too late for the SS models and you're too late to gain anything on a TT. So if it's about the money, don't bother buying it.

I'd want more than the sellers claim on it just being serviced, like a receipt. As fskywalker said you have an 8 to 1k bracelet repair needed as well.

Obviously it needs a bracelet repair. But without papers and without knowing the seller, it's worth assuming that the watch will need a movement overhaul in the near future as well, IMHO. When considering both those things, I personally can't say it is a watch I would want to buy as a first.

How much does he like this style?

He is a fan of 2 tone, Roman numerals and the datejust.

But after reading this thread I advised him to pass. I know that these bracelets stretch but I see so many that look similar on the vintage pieces that I guess I was ignorant to the fact that it was severe.

No harm no foul. I’ll keep browsing for him. Thanks for the responses!

And really, 41 is the new 36. My wife wears 36mm and 37mm now and she is only 110 lbs. Tell bro to keep looking and try on more watches
