Icon7 Rhinos Come to the Bond Market, and Other Species May Follow

A wonderful idea/opportunity to help the Black Rhino population and possibly other endangered species!

The planned sale of a rhino impact bond, aimed at growing the population of the endangered black rhino, is seen by its backers as a test for the creation of a conservation debt market that could be used for everything from protecting species facing extinction to preserving wildlife areas.

Same way I felt when I read this! I have reached out to The Zoological Society of London and expressed my interest in being involved and have asked to be updated as the program is rolled out to investors. I'll keep TRF posted incase others want to get involved too!

Great for social impact, but not such a great investment. Conservationists of all types are better off raising funds from the wealthy and providing tax benefits versus an anticipated yield through a debt instrument.

There have been “green” and “blue” bond offerings in the past. For conservation and ocean cleanup efforts in the past. Not sure how sold I could be.

The goal is laudable.

The measure of success is mired in political risk - well beyond the level of criminal risk (poachers).

Counting rhino’s 5 years from now makes the broad assumption that no armed conflict intervenes in that politically volatile part of the world.

The bond will sell and likely be oversubscribed - that’s good news. The payback should be geared to the organization’s ability to exceed its other fundraising goals 5 years hence.

If they successfully exceed the rhino headcount target, the payback might create a financial burden on the underlying financials of the org.
