New to me 1680 red, long-time grail watch

Feels amazing to have one finally, especially in such awesome condition. Purchased from original owner. From the beautiful matte mk4 dial with vibrant red text and creamy patina, to the unique "pateted" extension and silvery date wheel, it's a real treat to observe all the unique aspects of this special piece. So much character.

New to me 1680 red, long-time grail watch

Huge congrats to you. What a great watch. You found a beautiful example, a good honest watch.

The first vintage Rolex I ever purchased was a mk4 red sub. I saw my first photo of a red sub one night about 10 years ago when I stumbled into this vintage section of the Rolex forums and saw some photos.

The very next day, I wandered into my local jewelry store and I noticed a sub tossed into the corner of the estate case with red font on the dial and a handwritten white hang tag price tag on it. Jeweler said it had sat there for months (priced the same as its 16610 cousin).

Bought it on the spot, with the pledge from the shop owner that I could return it if it wasn’t genuine. Like yours, it was (basically!) a one owner watch. The jewelers long-time customer had it since new in 1970 and my jeweler bought it from him for stock for his store. It also came on a pateted 9315.

I wore it today.

Hope you enjoy that beauty for years to come.

What an awesome story! Thanks for sharing with me. I had a similar impulse need to buy this once I got into the details and saw it for what it was compared to most other examples out there. We all here look at so many of these thru pics or in-person on a regular basis, that it sometimes just smacks you across the face when it’s an obvious buy.

Thank you all. Really appreciate everyone taking a look and providing input on the condition given all the extensive knowledge in here. I’ve fortunately had a good number of Rolexes pass through my hands since beginning my collecting journey 10 yrs back and this one definitely feels special.

Congrats! The red sub is one of my favorites. It was also one of my first VR purchases.

Looks like a superb MK IV.

I do love the well-documented mis-spelling of "Pateted" on the clasp. Darn 1970s Rolex quality control!
