Speedy is king, followed by the Daytona and El Primero.

Daytona within the realm of affordable. If price is of no concern, PP or ALS.

Well, let's put it this way: for me, Daytona is highly ranked AMONG the kings of chronos.

If we're talking about watches that earned their places in history, well...Rolex Daytona (Paul Newman, Zenith and modern iterations), Omega Speedmaster Pro, Breitling Navitimer, Tag Heuer Monaco, various models of Zenith El Primero...all the iconic models.

(of course, there are numerous high-end chronographs that are more sophisticated than any of the mentioned, like models produced by Lange, Patek, FP Journe etc.)

I know this is a Rolex forum, and given the choice I would take a Daytona, but the moon watch deserves the prize here IMHO.

Daytona: The king of chronographs?

No way on the Speedmaster. No column wheel, no vertical clutch, that crunnch feeling on the Chrono function. I know that Rolex movements are not known for beauty, but the Lemania movements, even in the sapphire sandwiches, are just cheap looking in my opinion. I had nothing but issues with mine and found the finishing to be so so at best. Not a fan.

Picked this up today. I think the Lange datograph and omega speedmaster have more significance than the daytona.

Speedmaster Pro, Rolex Daytona, Breitling Navitimer, Heuer Monaco, Zenith El Primero...

Take your pick. All kings, just different kingdoms.

I own a ceramic Daytona and it is outstanding. It's bang accurate to within 0.25 seconds per day. When wind g the crown, it is like butter, so smooth to turn. The Daytona holds their values better than almost any other watch and it has 'cult' status, so for me it is one of the very best.

I also own 2 Breitling B01 in house chronograph and they are the best for 'bang for the buck' and are also outstanding chronographs.

I love the pre-Daytona chronographs. Rolex made really beautiful chronos before the introduction of the sport bezel.

I know it's totally left field, but I also absolutely love Universal Geneve Medico Compax chronographs.

These are a really cool type of tool watch where the chronograph hand is used for calculating heart rate.

Some say that Breitling B01 in-house movement is the best chronograph out there. Would I take Daytona over Breitling? Sure thing!

For manual watches A Lange Sohne Double Split
For automatic watches Zenith El Primero
My most favorite ever is Daytona though

Tough call. I would currently say the Daytona-C is king based on availability, desirability, price and quality.

I haven't owned a chrono since high school...... why? I generally don't like so much crammed into such a small space..... but if I were to buy one, it would be one of the major models that have been repeatedly listed....SMP, el primero, Monaco, navi b01, or Daytona. Each have their place or as someone else put it, their own kingdom. For my money though, it would be hard to pay 14k for a Daytona when most of the others can be had lnib for 3k...

Omega Speedmaster gets another vote as first, followed by Zenith El Primero and then Rolex Daytona

There's only one that is THE chronograph and that's ALS Datograph!

IMO the Daytona is a close second, followed by the Speedmaster at #4 or 5. A few PP Chrono pieces and and the 1815 chrono and AP ROO deserve mention. IMO the Speedmaster trails the others by a significant margin because Omega has largely diluted its Speedmaster brand by releasing countless variations, many of which in over the top case sizes that are inconsistent with its lineage. Just my opinion

Wow! Only imagine a modern updated Daytona at 40mm looking like this available new. To me that defines the Daytona.

For price no question it's a speedy/hesalite.

Otherwise Patek or ALS. ALS is my preferred brand above 25k.

I think the 4130 makes the modern Daytona the king. You've got a 72 hour power reserve (which is very useful) combined with a vertical clutch column wheel, which challenges most of the other contenders mentioned from an horological perspective.

All of those mechanical features contained in what many consider to be the perfectly proportioned and very comfortable case which is water proof enough to go anywhere, yet stylish enough to work in almost any social situation.
