A qualified local watchmaker is someone with whom you can build a relationship and with whom you can consult if there are any problems with your service.

With the RSC you get a two year warranty. I'm not sure about non RSC.

From my experience with rsc you get what you pay for the watch comes back like brand new and with a two year warranty to boot.

If you need something small fixed - magnetism, a small timing issue etc. a local watch person is cheaper and should be just fine. For a full service, I would go to RSC because it won't be that much more expensive and you will get a 2 year guarantee. Also, if they need to replace parts you will be guaranteed to get OEM replacements.

It is basically the same if the watchmaker is good, most likely they will just oil the whole movement though while Rolex will take every part apart so it is more work.

I just faced this same dilema and I chose RSC for the peace of mind. Turn around time is quite long though (8 weeks in Canada!)

RSC in Beverly Hills for me but the turn around time is sometimes longer and also they usually cost more. They're pretty good at little things like Chad said though (so far they've adjusted the bracelet, fixed the endlinks and gave me new spring bars for free). I've been there so many times I know each one by their first names so I guess I sort of built a relationship with them.
A local mom and pop store took forever to answer my email so I didn't even bother give them any business. lol |

RSC will replace parts (especially dial) with new ones. Kills value. Dial is most important and valuable element of a vintage Rolex.
** By "vintage" I mean Rolexes with 4 digit, and some 5 digit, reference numbers (and, of course, those with 6 digit serial numbers too). |

I use RSC when I can as I like the warranty however I have used independents and have been very happy as well. Usually if my watch has no papers I go the RSC route to get some documentation.

Long turn around is why you own more than one watch.

I only used local watchmaker so far. If you pick the right watchmaker they will be just as good as rsc and will use genuine rolex parts. I like the local watchmaker as it's easier talking to them, cost less, and turn around time generally is faster.

RSC fine for modern watch but for vintage not in this lifetime!

To me it's just the cost and the warranty that comes with RSC. Other than that it's not that big of a difference, granted you trust and know your watchmaker does good work. With vintage it's a bit different.
