Kicking myself!!

While in line at the food store I noticed an elderly gentleman with a rolex on a jubilee band. The face did not look like a datejust but it could have been. It was definately an older watch. Anyone out there ever strike up a coversation with a stranger about their watch. I am from a small town and not too many rolexes around for sure. Kinda kicking myself now but did not really know how to start the conversation. Did not want to stalk him or nothing, ha.

definitely, if they arent busy or look like theyre in a hurry i will simply say hey man i noticed your watch are you into watches at all or collect them? then they will usually proceed to either tell you yes i like watches a lot or no not really this was just a gift or so on!

It's hit or miss. Sometimes you'll strike up a good conversation and other times the person may grab his watch and walk away (as if someone is going to steal it). You probably did the right thing. Don't second guess.

You are from Canada, so you could of struck up a conversation. Maybe something like "nice watch eh" and gone from there!

Any person who would speak to me about whatever watch I am wearing I would consider suspicious and possibly attempting to rob me.

Notice but say nothing is the best policy.

I always make sure that it's real first. Even if it's fake (and they tell me it's real) it's good entertainment

Every chance I get, I talk watches with anyone who'll listen and if they join in the discussion, all the better.

Never approach a stranger about their watch....NEVER

99% of the population couldn't care less about watches.

They don't think like we do.

Just leave it be....

Yeah, but those are the ones you got to watch out for. The seemingly nice and approachable ones.

Kicking myself!!

I have to disagree, while visiting family at the Marriott ( Residence Inn ) near Sanibel Island, FL I was compliment on my time piece randomly. We were near the hotel pool and shared the grill with another guest. Said, "hey nice YM." We conversed for a few minutes and the other party told me about his two tone sub and how he came to possess it. ( if you are a member it was a pleasure to meet you and I hope your linguini w/ shrimp and scallop's turned out well!!)
I have also had other positive experiences however I always observe their mannerisms before I engage them.

Interesting topic.

No wonder there are so many other threads about whether it is "safe" to wear a Rolex.

I feel it's good to talk with other owners. We are all part of a social club and our timepieces are our admission. Every timepiece has it's own story and it's great to hear them. I like talking with other owners because of the stories of how then got them and how they chose them

99% of the population couldn't care less about watches - I agree.

BUT 99% of people wearing (for example) a Patek Minute Repeater DO care about watches.

I wouldn't go up to someone wearing a Rolex as they are worn by many non WIS...but if someone had on something special (to a WIS) then sure I would.

I've struck up conversations many times over watches, but it all depends on the occasion, timing, the watch in question, etc. The first comment will guide you.

I have commented several times on peoples watches...for example I was on a flight home from Miami a few weeks ago and the gentleman sitting next to me was wearing an LVC...i said hey nice sub and he kind of shrugged it off and was like oh yea thanks and that was about it..

Funny...I'm about to get on a flight, and the guy standing next to me at the gate has a DSSD.

and did you say anything?
I never dare say something, I feel I would intrude peoples' privacy. On the other hand, would love if someone said something to me (which has happened only ones a couple of years ago)

I do this probably about once a week.

It went poorly maybe twice.

I love striking up these types of conversations.

As long as you do it properly, everyone wins.

I'll say, "that's a great watch" in a friendly way. Usually works out pretty well.
