I work in the petroleum industry, living in the middle east.

I was in a meeting with three other guys yesterday and looking around the table, it was one new DJ 41, one TT blue sub, one older DJ on a jubilee, and my own sub. Four guys, four Rolex.

Reading thru some of the other posts on here, this would seem to be an unusually high number compared to other work places.

Is there something about oil men and Rolex?

Thoughts?

Do you really think it's the occupation?? It's simply how much money one makes that decides if they can afford a luxury watch or not.
At some point, it becomes a status symbol (we have to accept this) for SOME people. That's it,

It all depends how much one will sacrifice for a rolex. There are plenty of members here who like myself are just working class folks that like some of the finer things in life.

There is probably 10 Rolex wearers just on my office floor, one door down, DD2 Platinum so 2 DD2s within meters of each other. Our other offices are all AP lovers. Never a shortage of nice eye candy around our place.

My grandfather and father both worked in the oil business, and both were pretty modest about any purchases they made for themselves. My father wore a 5500 Air King, and the only reason was because my brothers and I pitched in and purchased it for him in 1980. He passed recently, and I now have his watch that I had fully restored. I grew up in Texas and can't remember when I first heard the term Texas Timex but I thought it was hilarious. I think the financial industry probably has more Rolexii per capita than any other field, but I could be wrong.

I'm in the oil and gas industry as well. I see plenty of Subs, DJs, DD, and DSSD. I was on a panel with five people the other day...a Sub, Sub, EXPII, DJ, and one ROO.

The guys that travel, I'll see more GMTs -- which is why I went with an EXPII. Oddly, I don't see too many Daytonas -- just two that I can think of off the top of my head.

I also see quite a few of the younger guys with AP ROOs as well.

I watched Dallas as a kid and JR was my hero
I remember the Rolex with the custom bracelet JR wore on the show, that was my first exposure to Rolex and I knew right away it was something special

It goes back. Years ago Red Adair, the oil fire fighter, was used by Rolex to advertise the DD.
