Chaps

I have a 39mm Explorer and a 16610 Sub and I now fancy either an Explorer2 or a GMT.

I am veering to a black Explorer2 but I notice that occassionally an Explorer II Orange Hand Steve McQueen comes up for sale at twice the normal price.

I can see the visual difference, ie a I instead of a number on the bezel which I actually like.

Is there any other difference or is it just a collectors item due to scarcity ?

It is becoming less and less common to find 1655 Explorer 2's in nice condition. They are vintage, and rare which is what makes them expensive! Personally, I love them.

There is a modern EXII and a vintage EXII.
Both have orange 24hr hands.
So you have a choice.
Steve McQueen never wore an EXII, but a 5512 Submariner.

Modern is 42 mm 1655 is 40 mm

I bought the black dial Explorer II and love it.
For me I don't like the orange hand I much prefer there'd one and with the new Explorer II's I don't like that they changed the Explorer II on the dial to orange to match the hand.

I like the fixed bezel on the Exp II Better than the GMT and you get the GMT feature on the Epx II
I just like that you don't see as many Exp II's as you do Subs or GMT's on the wrists of Rolex owners.
The Explorer II is an underrated undervalued watch and it shouldn't be

If you are going for the new Explorer 42mm, just be sure the larger case suits you. Super watch but the larger size is not for everyone and I know some guys (including myself) who flipped them because of that! Good luck!

I think what Rolex has done with the new (2011) 42mm is perfect. I went to an AD to buy a GMT-Master II, saw two Exp II's in the case (one polar one black) and I was a goner.

The Exp II in it's latest form is understated, still classic, but brings the style forward enough to shake off any perception that it may of been my father's watch (nothing wrong with looking like my father's watch).

(It has also taken a real beating with no complaints in training during my part-time gig in state law enforcement including sustained direct weapon recoil. And, the black dial works great with suits.)

The new explorer ii is my favorite watch right now. I have the black version and I grow to love it more and more each day. It is understated and rugged as others have previously mentioned. I don't think that you will be disappointed if you get one, I know I wasn't.

There is nothing about it that I don't like.
The crystal was just replaced I couldn't stand the scratches and then he next week I had the hands replaced because there was no lume left

Love the ad! I think the black version looks more classy but bought the polar Exp II because of increased readability. Without light shining off the rhodium plated hands, my eyes look for the white lume to detect the hands. The rhodium appears gray against the black background. Same is true with my Exp I and other black faced watches I own. The black hands really stand out against the polar Exp II. But this is an aging eye problem that most of you kids have yet to experience!
