Some 46 years ago I bought my first Rolex (an explorer) about ten years ago I bought my wife a lady datejust. I bought my son and daughter in-law a Rolex each as a wedding gift. I bought my daughter a George Jenson (her choice I don't know where i went wrong) and son in-law a Datejust. Now the big question I have three grand children there may be a fourth in a couple of years time. What I'm thinking of doing is buying a watch the year of their birth and giving them on their 18th birthday if I'm still living. I've given this a lot of thought lately but I don't know which watches to choose. Perhaps a datejust for the boys and an air king or midsize for the girls.
What do you all think of this idea.
They won't forget grandpa will they!

I think explorers and oyster perpetuals are great options too

I bought my brother a GMT a few years ago....so better to give than receive i guess.

And yes i suppose sub or gmt for boys; and i'd also go with a 36mm datejust for the girls...my wife prefers this size.

I bought my baby boy a 36mm DJ on jubilee - a birth year watch.

I've got loads of pics of him wearing it as a new born.

I plan to give it to him on his 21st and be able to say this watch is 21 years old just like you.

The DJ to me is a timeless classic that will never go out of style.

Great idea! Talk about creating family heirlooms! One thing to consider- buying those watches and holding them for the next couple decades will involve a couple trips to service, per watch/grandkid. This could add up to a decent sum. I'd hate to give a 20 year old NOS watch that needed to be serviced a family member who isn't as financially stable as Grandpa.

Yes I had considered the issue of an 18 year old watch being used for the first time and needing a service prior to being given. But I think the sentiment behind it will be worth it.
I think I'm going with the sub and the datejust.

Now for the girls which style of datejust should I look for.
Any suggestions

I think since your first was an explorer theirs should be too. Classic all purpose watch that they can enjoy for their lifetime. Regardless of which watch you choose it is a great idea and the fact that you and your wife have one and you've already gifted 3/4 of their parents with them will only make it that much nore special. Truly great idea and congratulations on being able to do it!

YM was my choice of gift to my two daughters when they were old enough to "toast" with a proper beverage. If I had any sons (which I don't), I would have gifted either the Explorer or the GMTII.

Bought the first watch today for grandson. Submarine date The restoration card is dated March 2014 and guess what - Seb was born March 20th 2014 doesn't get any better. The chase is on for an August 2011, midsize yacht master or datejust just have to see what comes along.

Will do when I get all three. In the meantime how do you suggest I look after these watches for example the sub date that I have received yesterday was first sold in March 2014 and it is in as new unused condition. I am going to put it away for a further 15 years as Seb has only just had his 3rd birthday. How do you suggest I look after it. Do you think I should run it every three months for a weekend or so or just let it sleep for 15 years and have it serviced just before his 18th birthday?
