Am I Nuts to Get a Rolex at Age 18?

I am 18 years old and I have been in love with watches ever since I was a little kid but owning one watch in particular, the Rolex Submariner, has been a dream of mine for about a decade. I have the funds to purchase a no-date 114060 now, but the fact remains that wearing such an well-known expensive watch at such a young age might command negative judgement from others. There is also the fact that I would be buying this over a car, which most of my friends would find insane, but I am very happy taking the bus to and from college, so I really don't feel the need for a car right now. I love the Submariner with all my heart but I would love to get the opinions of some of the wiser members of this wonderful forum, since I certainly have some maturation and growing up to do. Thank you so much to everyone who responds; it is greatly appreciated.

You know what you want better than anyone else. If you can afford it, then go for it.

I had an Omega Speedmaster at 24 years old. The dumb thing....I sold it when I was 25.

Live your life how you want to live it....as long as you or no one else gets hurt, have fun.

For the record, I am now 47 and have two daughters, ages 16 and 24. I tell them to spend wisely and responsibly. That said, when I was just a little older than you are now, I lived a lifestyle that was barely affordable but great fun.

Enjoy life. The bus ain't so bad.

IMHO, getting that sub would be better than buying a car. The watch will last you a lifetime, and is a classic. The car might not. So if you are asking me...getting the watch makes more economic sense in the long run. And if you love the sub that much, I believe that taking the bus isn't such a bad preposition after all.

Hopefully the model you want is a desired one, that way if you have to liquidate, you should be able to quickly and without much of a loss.

No it is probably a good time to get one. One warning, Rolex aren't like most items, if a deal is too good to be true, it is certainly is.

I got my first rolex just a few weeks ago on my birthday as a gift from my mom... its a YELLOW GOLD rolex daytona 116508... i wanted this watch for 5-6 years now... even wore a fake(steel) for a few months when i found out about this watch just so i could satisfy myself but later decided that I would wait for a real one.... now i proudly wear mine to college or wherever i dont care what people think.... i know it maybe a bit out-there to be wearing a rolex when you are 18 and in college.... there are just too many people wearing gold watches and any watch for that matter.... people dont really notice it that much(other than your friends). If you can buy it and want it, you should get it!

your $. do what you want. that $10000 would look good in a TFSA however or a good step towards a downpayment for a house later on......

you definitely will attract a lot of 'attention' from your friends and others wearing a Rolex at age 18 unless of course you come from an 'affluent' family......

but again. your $$ your choice. what anyone else thinks does not matter.

If you have no debt, or foreseeable expenses (tuition, etc...which might cause you to sub exist on ramen for a while), then go with what gives you satisfaction the most.

Bought my first 36mm SS DateJust when I was 18...worked my ass off for that watch. I still own it today. Best thing I ever did!

That's my advice, but I've been called a bad influence before, once or twice

There's a guy with a blog out there who tells a story of buying his first. Rolex at a young age. I can't tell by his writing style if it's hyperbole or if that's the way it all went down.

I want to say it's jakes rolex world or something like that.

haha

and therein lies the problem.......18 yrs old with a rolex attracts attention and if that attention can't be backed up...ex: no car etc...than it can present quite the 'image' problem.....

may not be a popular opinion but 'young' people pick up on these things......

You sound like an intelligent young man who has a level of maturity uncommon for those your age. I didn't get my first Rolex until age 65 though I wanted one for many decades.
A car will last a few years. A Rolex will last a lifetime.
Go for it.

If I could wind back the clock, I'd have purchased a Rolex Sub (or two) instead of the Ducati motorcycle I bought instead. Granted the motorcycle was more fun in college.

I would say not a good idea because you are about to enter into times when you may need to sell it or it might get you beat up in some college bar. I would just hold off until after college. Maybe an Omega or a really nice Seiko to stay under the radar for a while until you get settled.

No. It's a lifetime watch. If it's in your budget it's way cool.

I worked hard to get a Sub at age 20. Wore it everyday for many years. To be honest not many noticed--even in the 80's. Never was an issue for me. I cherished that watch.
So no, you are not nuts. If you can afford it and it brings you joy-go for it.

I'm going to be the odd man out and say get your car first. If you pass on a Rolex, are you risking anything? I'd say you're not; you can always buy one later. If you pass on a car, are you risking anything? I'd say you are.

How much more will it cost you to pay for bus fare every day? And what about being at the mercy of the bus schedule? Have you ever had to wait outside for a bus in the winter? It sucks. Have you ever done it every day for weeks on end? It sucks even harder.

If there's bad weather or you miss the bus, what happens to your schooling? What if you miss a test? I can tell you first hand that many professors don't care if you miss the test; you fail anyway (I'm 29, just finished my 2nd bachelor's degree a couple years ago, if that means anything to you.)

And besides, you'll need a car after college to get a job, won't you? What if the bus route doesn't take you to your new gig?

Submariners aren't going anywhere. Why not try to find a cheap, reliable car for ~$5K or so to last you through college and getting a job, then save up just a little more for the sub while you're in school? How much longer would it be? Maybe you can even get both if you go used/vintage?

Nope....go for it! I purchased my first one at 18 as well. It was the beginning of a lifelong passion with Rolex as others have come and gone since.

Just make sure you have it insured. I have a feeling if its your daily higher risk of robbery, theft. Not many at 18 think much about insurance.

It doesn't really matter what age you are, spending on a $5K+ watch is a big decision. If you don't need the watch or car then the better decision would likely be to invest the money early on and watch it grow.

I think you have a goal and something that is achievable. If you want one just make it happen and enjoy it everyday!
