Question re buying my son his birth year Rolex

Dear WISs, I had this idea to get my newborn son a Rolex that I'll wear and give to him when he's old enough to appreciate it. He's a month old now.

My question is - is there a way to tell via serial numbers and such when the watch was actually made? Getting him one made last year would kind of spoil it's symbolic value..

Many thanks for any help!

Since all serial #s are now random, the warranty card will have the sale date on it which will show his birth year. As long as it's a relatively popular model (stainless steel sports, for example) it's almost certain that the AD got it within the last few months. With less popular models, you wouldn't really know.

I've had this same idea, i may do it if there's (hopefully) another opportunity. Warranty card would really be only proof, but I'm sure Rolex would be able to decode serial in the future.

Dear OP:
Please find a BNIB Rolex with open card.

You can then write in the name and date specific to your needs.

If you have questions PM me please.

Hope this works with the wife. Looking for a 2002 sub and a 2003 Coke!!!

OP, the simple answer is, no. You will never really know. The date your son will remember is the date that will be on the warranty card. So buy new from an AD now so you know 1000% that warranty card was swiped in 2017 and not at the end of last year. Of course if a David or Than can go get you a watch and guarantee a current date then have at it and save a few $$. But if not it is not worth the risk in my opinion.

There has never been a way to state 100% when any Rolex was made over the last 30 odd years. Only a approx date when the case or clasp was stamped between X&Y years or when it was sold.

That is awesome. Congratulations. I wish we would have done something like this even though I do have a few things that I would pass on down to the kids.

Nice idea. Hope the kid values a mechanical watch in 2037 or so

I have a GMTIIC purchase the year my son was born. If he's not into watches in 20 years - well, I guess I'm keeping it
