114060 or 116600 for first Rolex?

Currently trying to decide between a nearly new 114060 around $6400 or a excellent condition 116600 SD4K for right at $8000. Will be a daily wearer for the most part. My thought is there are plenty of ND subs and SubC on the market, but the SD4K is pretty collectible since being discontinued. Which one do you choose and why?

I'd be fine either. You have good taste. Get the SD. It's a little more special. Make sure you can handle the size. It's a bit thick to fit under a dress shirt.

If OPs got the wrist it takes to handle a thicker watch, I'd go SD4K. The SD4K has a really nice proportion (lugs), and Matte dial + fully graduated bezel gives way more tool watch character than SubC.

If you like it to be a bit more bling, bit more dressy and bit more versatile, go for the sub. I'd go NDsub. I have the sub date, and the more I learn about watches, the more I appreciate the clean and balanced dial of the NDSub, not to mention it truly carries the DNA of the sub lineage.

Decisions decisions?

SD is definitely the more collectible and less common, great watch!

That being said, I went 114060 Sub for myself. I just like the Sub. I like the slimmer profile, the no date dial symmetry, and the fact that it's a Sub...the archetypal diver watch. The watch that defined and solidified an entire category of watches. The SD looks like it does only because of the Sub...the Sub is the source, the rest are derivative. Yes, Blancpain may have been first, but the impact of the Sub is pretty incontrovertible.

Now that may not matter much to some, and understandly so, but it was a factor for me and just one of the reasons I wanted to go Sub.

Thanks so much for the quick replies. My wrist is nearly 8 inches, so i think the SD4K won't be too big. I love the balance of the ND Sub and the extra lume at night. However i am a huge fan of the full graduated bezel and the thinner case of the SD4K makes it feel less square than the ND Sub. Ugh! so torn...

You called it "collectible" which I am not sure about. Rolex made tons of them, despite not being super hot sellers. I'd go with "unique": one reason I switched from a 16610 to the 16600 is because Sub Dates seem to be everywhere and while most people wouldn't notice the difference, I do. Yours is a little different situation but similar.

Also we are about the same wrist size and as such I think you will appreciate the extra heft.

116600 for better proportions on lugs/case. The way it sits without the diver extension is very balanced and comfortable also...dare I say more comfortable than the six digit maxi cases. If you want one I'd buy sooner than later to avoid future speculation. I've never had trouble putting the sd4k under any dress shirts I wear.

114060 is the way to go. I just got mine not too long ago and love it. It has a great lime and is just the right size. The classic and symmetrical look is just awesome.

I own the 116600. I like it and it's a definite keeper but if it weren't for the collectible factor I'd go for the ND SUB 114060.

SD4K.. and this is coming from a sub owner for a couple years. The proportional case and comfort of the watch is top notch. Matte dial makes things interesting as well.

I own both but the 116600 has to go. Reason: i got tired of the pimples of the bezel. The 114060 is still here i just prefer the cleaner and balance look.

Have you tried them both on? Does one make you smile more than the other? If so, that's the one. If not, follow TRF's rule and get both (or keep looking). ;-)

This would be my pick, but you should truly pick the watch YOU like the most and not speculate on future price increases, unless of course that is the reason you are buying it. Good luck you really can't go wrong between the two, don't forget to post pictures
