Does the value of your watch impact how you wear it?

Simple question: does the current market value of your watch impact how you wear it?

I’m no stranger to expensive watches and generally don’t fret about how I wear my watches relative their cost. Most would cringe to see what I wear when fishing, boating, motorcycling, hunting, golfing, etc. However the recent (insane) valuation of steel Pateks has begun to influence how I wear them. I’ve found myself worrying about scratches and dings on my steel Pateks whereas it was never a consideration before. I have no such hangups with my PM watches - only steel. Brand has little bearing on it. Maybe I’m just not meant to own steel? Thoughts?

The other way to look at it is that even with scratches, a steel Patek will still be worth more than you paid (assuming MSRP).

No, I baby all of my watches. I still wear my Pateks in regular rotation.

I baby all of my watches, but I will admit I wear them differently depending on their market value. I am more scared of scratching or losing them and being unable to replace them because the price has gone up significantly, or there are significant waitlists for the piece.

I baby all my watches at first, I think they all deserve that respect regardless of its tool-ness. But as time goes by I just forget to baby them very much, even the gold ones I was alarmed to find out, so I make a decision on what to wear before I put it on as I know I will forget it's on, esp in the midst of my animated discussions when I need to remember most!

I also wear them all on my daily rotation, but im much more mindful when wearing a patek vs my daytona. That patek bezel is quite delicate.

To some degree yes. I am a bit more cautious with my 15202 and 16610lv MK1.

Nah I buy to wear, not to sell. Only criteria is I'm not wearing a PM (esp RG) to a casual deal. I'm not gonna be that guy.

I am assuming that "watch value" is PM although some vintage SS can be quite pricy and I do not have any yet.

I try to make sure I wear a PM for more formal/dressy occasions but also anytime I fell like it. Otherwise, I just wear them all the same.

Not scratches but when they increase enough and I haven't increased the insurance coverage to match the current replacement cost or I wont be able to find a replacement I start to be more cautious when and where I wear them.

yes.

I didn't wear my 5712 for a month until the price rise went into effect and i got an updated valuation. 5% rise in september + 20% in march was too much of a gap if anything were to happen. Not sure i would try to replace it at a significant out of pocket.

When you are in to the 5711, 5131's, or other high value discontinued pieces then i would have a harder time wearing them at all as those are irreplaceable from an AD regardless of insurance cover

location in relation to personal safety is the only concern I have. Certain countries and regions nothing is worn except clothes. I don’t want my watch to become something a few hundred people just became intent on having.

For Patek generally my only consideration is water (rain). On anything with a bracelet I’m going to favor wearing long sleeves due to scratches.

For a 5711/1a that has doubled (practically) in value, it affected my opinion and enjoyment of wearing it. Every scratch is $500 (+/-)! It was easier to wear and enjoy when the 5711 was not so hard to find and was trading fairly close to MSRP.

I got a minor scratch on my 5726/1a white dial over a year ago. Now I can (and do) wear it to almost anything. Freedom is wonderful!!

I do most everything wearing my 218235, hike, swim , etc..but I won’t wear it while turning wrenches, that’s where my 16600 comes in.

My first BLRO looked like I put it through the dryer with a bag of rocks.

Subconsciously yes. When my watch get scratched, the symmetry or balance of the aesthetics will be affected. It's difficult to produce another scratch on the "other side", and why would one do that purposely? I'm not a fan of polishing too, so yea, I will be more careful of what I do with my watch.

Hate to admit it but yes. Taking my young kids away for spring break and was going to take my ROC and 5711, but the more I think about it I will probably take a Rolex and Ceramic Diver. The thought of my young kids, beach and rocks scares the crap out of me.

I think if PP turnaround on a polish was in weeks rather than months I would be more gung ho, but I'd hate for it to be away for a long time just due to that, and I can't take too many marks to my PP bezels, while bracelets and cases I'm fine with.

Even though I do not buy my watches worrying about future resale, I wear them and baby them.
