I think Tudor appeal to a lot of watch lovers who prefer the older rolex models to the new shiny & ceramic Rolexes.

I love a vintage sub (1680/16800 matte especially) but there’s not one modern Rolex I’d buy. There’s plenty of new Tudor’s I’d buy! I just hope they come out with the old sub case, snowflake or otherwise.

They don’t do much for me with the snowflake hour hand. I’d go for Omega or GS at that price point.

I just left an AD and experienced my very first "on wrist" time with some Tudor models. My initial thoughts.

- Outside of buying for strictly dinner/formal situations. I really can't entertain anything a single mm under 41. The GMT and the newer black bay heritages seemed soooooo petite on my stocky frame. These 41mm cases seem to wear smaller than Omega Aqua Terra 41mm cases.

- The two-tone S&G black bay is really sexy but a little too sexy to be my "daily beater" which is what i was shopping for.

- The S&G on distressed leather strap WOULD be a strong consideration for me but their "41" case seems too small for me.

- The cons i've read about are as bad as i've read...
A) Case depth: I have an Oris Artix GT Chronograph with a ETA7750 movement in side. I don't care if it is 70hours power reserve, there is no way they should have allowed a no date 3-hander to roll off the assembly line as thick as a chronograph. It doesn't add to the wrist presence, it just adds to the things to not like about the watch.

B) Faux Rivets: Read a lot about these on this forum. When I personally saw them on the two-tone today I distinctly recall rolling my eyes and trying to pretend they weren't there lol. I don't think anyone here is going to knock functional screw pins, but gag... these don't add character for me, they only perpetuate the stereotype that "Tudor is the poor man's rolex"

- Somewhat surprisingly, the bronze put the biggest smile on my face. Plus it wasn't even in the color i was excited to try. They had the older less versatile brown one, rather than the black/slate-grey one which looks way better in photos to me. I put the brown one on and the 43mm has a nicer wrist presence, the bronze case simply oozes character and uniqueness. This may very well be the next watch I purchase.

If you're talking the bronze models, or even some of the quirky-er colored BB bezel colors then I'm 100% on your side Brew. But as for the Pelagos... I'd be quite interested for anyone to convince me that it's anything but a poor man's submariner *shoulder shrug*

Tudor makes a good watch and definitely up’d their game in recent years. Only one I own at present is a Black Bay Bronze, I like the manly aesthetic and it’s among my most accurate watches.

I love my Tudor BB36, it’s the perfect daily wearer and sits so comfortably on the wrist.
I did a review/comparison between my BB36 and 116000 on other forums, but here are a few epics.

I added this vintage Prince OysterDate recently.

Here are my modern pieces.

I posted this vintage Tuxedo earlier in the thread.

Something I feel I should note:

While i was there I took the obligatory shot at asking to see if they had an Explorer II. I received the usual "sorry but that's a hot model that's hard to keep in stock"

After I had tried on the S&G, Bronze, and traditional Black Bays i was like "... wait a minute. do you all happen to have the GMT? That's why I was asking about the explorer. I would get a lot of use out of that complication".

My sales woman started to give me the exact same "that's a hot model, and we only take deposits". She disappears for a little bit, comes back and gives me a catalog. Then another sales woman comes to the table and magically finds a GMT Black Bay "they just got in..." I tried it on and enjoyed the complication but ultimately decided i preferred the stronger wrist presence of the bronze.

All that said, it VERY much seemed like they were feeling me out as a customer. I believe my Sales lady told the other one to bring that GMT up after talking to me more and feeling like I was "worthy to purchase the GMT". It really has me wondering if we are at the early stages of Tudor evolving into the use of Rolex scarcity tactics. GOD I freaking hope not.

I don't consider any watch that sells for about $4k a "poor man's XXXX." I have 4 Tudors as shown in my sig. I consider them strong performers especially at their price point. The bronze is quite unique. If demand rises against supply I suppose they will get scarce and subject to Internet hype.

I love what Tudor is doing, and what they have done in the past. My favorite models are the ones from the 80s-90s especially the pre-Tiger chronograph.

Witness the hype around Rolex's new 32XX movement with the improved PR and rotor. The in house Tudor movement has those same features.

If you bronze owners could say how many months you’ve had Your bronzes and add pics showing off the patina thatd be greatly appreciated. After my visit to the AD today I’m dead set on the new black bronze, but curious as to how the bronze looks 12 to 18 months after purchase

Is VW a poor man's Audi? Is Audi a poor man's Porsche? Is Porsche a poor man's Lamborghini?

Or, moving away from the VAG group, is Alfa Romeo a poor man's Maserati? Is Maserati a poor man's Ferrari?

Each of those manufacturers have qualities and models of cars which stand out in their designated markets, much like how the Tudor brand has been revived by Rolex so they can compete in the sub £3k/$5k market that they have vacated with successive price increases over the last decade.

The question really is not whether Tudor is a poor man's Rolex, it should be why have Rolex priced themselves out of a market segment they used to dominate?

The answer could be because the management consultants have looked at the state of the market and what the future holds when young smartwatch wearing millennials become older and enter their target demographic.

They probably have seen the writing on the wall that most mid luxury watches will become almost obsolete and the only way they can survive is to price themselves as higher end luxury watches and move further up the Veblen totem pole. Hence why they probably secretly want this high demand craze to continue for as long as possible so their brand can stay relevant in the future.

Either way I'm expecting to be driving an Alfa with a Ferrari engine some time next year whilst most likely wearing a Tudor out of this set.

I have a superb Tudor Submariner that I purchased new while serving in the U.S. Navy in 1990. Totally made by Rolex with signed crown and case backing, the watch has been absolutely magnificent! At the time of purchase, this watch cost me $880 brand spanking new, now it's worth close to $6000! Not a bad investment. Has only been serviced once at an RSC about 4 yrs ago, and the watch is truly a jewel. All I can say is if you have doubts, throw them out the window. Tudor is truly a superb watch brand that you'll not be disappointed with.

I owned three; they all were a bit large for my 6.5 inch wrist and were let go of. I loved the BBs but just too large. Only one I'd consider is the BB58.

Was thinking the same thing, and absolutely agree with this sentiment. The saying shouldn't apply to any luxury purchase, and any watch that costs $1k+ isn't something on a poor man's purchase list. A Tudor is a luxury item, albeit at a different finish level and price point than a Rolex. They each serve their purpose well, and arguably (at list price) are leaders in the market at their respective price points.

I have had my BB Bronze about 2 years but the patina developed quite rapidly. I week of wear in the summer with some sweating gets it patinaed quickly. Note that the caseback is a different bronze, and designed NOT to tarnish/patina.

See my post #195 above and:

Oh, thanks for that. I was wondering about the caseback, interesting and very nice that they used a different alloy. The Oris bronze model has a stainless steel back to avoid the excessive tarnish. Pics of patina of that one here: https://www.fratellowatches.com/oris...-watch-review/
