1970 Rolex 1016 - question

Hey all,

I was hoping to get some opinions from you guys on this 1970 explorer. Everything on it is original I've been told. I am wondering why the hands are so much more patina'd than the dial. Are there 1016 gilt dial examples from 1970, or are they all earlier? Also, does the condition of the dial (ie lume @12) affect the value a lot, and what would be a fair price?

When people talk about dial condition and value, they’re usually talking about an overall aesthetic. To me, that dial is not attractive...

Pictures are grainy but I’m wondering if the tritium has been removed, leaving only the paint? If the price is right, you could invest in having it relumed.

No. They stopped gilt dials in 1966.
And this dial, like those commenting above, is not good. And that lume cracking/flaking at 12 is only going to get worse.

Maybe it is just the crystal distorting but the writing on the dial looks a bit odd.

The dial is not good looking as well. So I would not buy it if I were you.

Looks like it was once a period correct frog foot dial. It appears that the dial has been washed and the lumes removed.

If you factor in the cost of a replacement period correct dial (GB£k2.5-3.5k ?) then you can decide if the watch works for you.

Gulp! 2.5 to 3.5 L for a replacement dial? Wow!

Looking at my 1016, the second hand is considerably shorter than what's shown in the picture. It goes just to the inner tip of most of the white tick marks, although the crystal curvature may be distorting what's show in the image you provided. The patina on my watch's hands and the numerals on the face matches.

Just my observations from a 1972 1016 that I've owned since new.

The minutes and seconds hand can be shorter for a 1972- did a lot of research when looking at one but ended up with a 69 2.1m
