Thanks OP and Tom for fighting the battle.

I wrote about this last year but it was beating a dead horse. I'm actually dismayed so many members cannot discern the difference, or refuse to acknowledge that these are totally different cases.

Good to see more people on boat. I also think the next SS daytona will incorporate the PM case, as the lugs, under lugs, and crown guards are so much more modern and fitting for the next Daytona iteration. Even the caseback is different!

If you look at the right hand side of the watch leading to the crown guards, you must surely notice there is more metal and the right hand lugs are also wider and not tapered like the SS Daytona??

This is FACT not my opinion!

Exactly. I have been trying the daytona two-tone and now I know why it always look smaller.

So is the platinum case the same size and dimensions as the WG case?

pm Daytona

This one is definitely the ss dimensions ! Lugs and pertrusion from under bezel are certainly not in keeping with other pm Daytona??
Any comments appreciated -

Don't worry, YG and TT share the same case and bezel font as the SS.

Pt, RG, and WG have the newer case with the curved lugs and thicker guards.

Here's something I put together:

I actually like the smaller, asymmetrical proportions of SS version. Though Rolex certainly succeeded in making the platona more substantial looking with subtle dimension alterations.

Great pics!

On my 116518, bought around 12 years ago, the lugs are curved and the bracelet connection is different.

But not entirely correct, unfortunately. YG on bracelet has the same case size then TT and SS: all leather Daytonas have the bigger case.

I suppose that whatever we say there will always be people who won't believe it. However:
  • SS, TT, YG on bracelet: 38.6 mm
  • WG, RG, Pt: 39.6 mm
  • all leather models: 39.6 mm
Full stop.

Another subtle difference is the PM bezels reflect light differently.
The SS which is more muted & duller than PM , the PM bezels really pops as if it has diamond dust
in there/ kind of like chops up the light is it reflecting making it more shinier, as long as they are new the difference is very obvious.
Again there are very subtle differences. Down side of Gold is the bezel scratches easier.

Daytona:Size of PM versus SS

Well well well....somebody suggested that the measurements of a watch excluding crown should be diagonal....just had the calipers out and measured my WG Daytona and it's exactly 40mm!!

Can anybody measure a 116520 (SS) and also a Platinum Daytona on the diagonal?

You certainly can.

Do you have any callipers by the way? If you do, could you measure both SS & Pt diagonal 10 til 4?
