I don’t trust anyone posting high end watches on Craigslist

For the life of me I just can't understand why people make blanket statements about how terrible ebay and craigslist are for buying watches. There are legitimate deals to be had in both places. Sure, use your brain, ask questions, be aware of your surroundings. That or you can buy the same watch from a "Trusted Seller" for a lot more money. Randy |

I am a little leery of eBay because I like to handle things before I buy, and their idea of mint and mine are usually pretty far apart, but craigslist can be a treasure trove if you know what you're looking at, and if you meet in a public place during daylight hours. I have probably bought a half dozen Rolexes and three times that number of Omegas over the years on craigslist, and on a lot of these deals I've had to hold my chuckles until I was at least a few blocks away, just to keep from embarrassing the sellers. On one, a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date 15223, the seller thought his watch was from 1974 or something because he saw a photo of one like it on the internet. It turned out to be a 1990 model, sapphire & quickset, SS/18K. I bought it so well that, even with restoration, I was in the watch for something less that half the going market value. And I get a kick out of the before-and-after nature of restoring the gems I find. Picking up a watch on the short-hop like that gives you an edge: you can be in it inexpensively, and with a fresh service you know exactly what you have. Yard sales, garage sales, local auctions, and estate sales are a gold mine if you know what you're looking at. Just use common sense when meeting (in banks or restaurants), and Bob's your uncle. |
