Should I Consolidate into Patek?

My watch collecting journey started in earnest in 2014 and over the last ~10 years I've accumulated a collection of watches that I am proud of with pretty much every "goal" watch I've wanted up to this point residing in my safe.

Over the last few months however I've looked at my collection of 10 watches and realized a few things:

- I don't cycle through these 10 watches and really only wear 3-4
- Unless I'm wearing a suit (rarely) I prefer wearing watches on bracelets
- Full yellow gold may be too loud for me (wife says so)
- I do love a Daytona
- Wife won't let me sell the 40th anniversary rose gold day date (wedding watch)
- I really want a Patek Nautilus
- I'm tired of having a lot of "stuff" just sitting around
- I may be a hoarder

With that in mind I'm considering a few alternatives to change up the collection and curious of your thoughts. The watches I'm considering parting with in the scenarios are a YG Daytona "Newman" Dial (116528), YG Oysterflex Daytona (116518ln), AP RO Silver Dial 37mm (15450), Vacheron FiftySix (Vacheron) and Rose Gold Cartier Santos de Cartier (Cartier)

Scenario 1:
Trade: 116528, 15450, and Vacheron (+cash) toward a Patek 5712
Keep: PP 5712, 116518ln, DD 228235, AP Rose Gold 38mm Chrono, Cartier, + Panerai and IWC that have no trade in value

Scenario 2:
Trade: 116528, 116518, 15450, Vacheron, Cartier (+lots of cash) toward a Patek 5712 AND Platinum Daytona 116506 Diamond Dial
Keep: PP 5712, Platinum Daytona, DD 228235, AP Rose Gold 38mm Chrono

Scenario 3:
Trade: 116528, 116518, 15450, Vacheron, Cartier (+lots of cash) toward a Patek 5740G
Keep: PP 5740G, DD 228235, AP Rose Gold 38mm Chrono

I know this is a lot of text but I've never really sold anything from the collection and value everyone's opinions here.

I did that this week. Sold two day dates and have an aquanaut coming tomorrow. Couldn't be happier after I finally ripped the bandaid to make the deal

I think it's always good to sell pieces you don't wear at all.

Should I Consolidate into Patek?

Great options. I need to do some consolidating myself. I’ve let it get out of hand..
I’d go for option three. 5740 is just too good to leave on the table. Gotta have an ap and a Rolex. So ya, option 3.

Option 3 but I'd add a SS Sub or GMT to this collection still.

I'd go for Option 2.

The 5740 is great but too expensive for what you get.

Many will say the same about the 5712, but not to the same degree as the 5740.

Less is more, so option 3 for me as well.

Alternatively I'd lose all those of option 3 but get a 5712 instead of the 5740 (with cash your way I assume). The 5712 may make a better daily as it doesn't get banged up as easily and isn't a 200k watch either.

I’ll reply over here as well:

A slight variation to your proposals…

End up with the 5712/1a, 116506 baguette dial, the RG DD40, and the 116518ln.

Punt the rest.

Scenrio 3 sounds the best to me. 5740 is really a nice watch.

Option 2 but I would rather have a 5711 over 5712.

The 518LN is one of my favourite watches. So for me that stays. The VC and AP can go, the others depending on your needs. I would say don’t stretch for the 5740 for now. Get something within your budget range. Get the 5712/5726 and then think about the 5740 later.

Agree 1000%! You will be very well rounded and have 4 different metals. I prefer the 12A and cash saved vs stretching for a 5740 which isnt as wearable IMO and everytime I see the watch all I can think of is Mickey Mouse on the dial.

I have sold off the majority of my collection 3 times in the past 30 years. I just recently sold off 5 to purchase 1. Like you, I find myself only wearing 3 or 4 out of 15.

Buy what you love.

Good luck.

Just tried this on and it’s quite good…

Also tried a platona and surprisingly did not like it as much as I remembered.

The 5740 looks great on you.

I also think the Platona is rather underwhelming while the Daytona looks great in YG.

I was able to spend some time with the 116506 platona, 5712 and 5740 this week.

I didn’t love the Platona as much as I had remembered. The dial didn’t contrast with the platinum enough for me and in the sunlight (which there is a lot of here in Miami) I just did not like the brown bezel.

The 5712 is great and I love how silky it feels on the wrist but I couldn’t get over how light it was and how “chintzy” the bracelet felt even compared to the royal oak. It just didn’t feel the $90+ k they were asking.

The 5740 fixes the heft and bracelet issue and the dial is SO much more blue in the light/sun than the 5712. I’m also a huge fan of chronographs and symmetrical dials and the 5740 gives me a similar feel especially since both Daytonas are going.

In the end both Daytonas are being sold as well as the 15450 and I should get the Patek early this week. Excited!
