I think all of us on here who choose to initiate a conversation about someone else's watch do so knowing that the gambit may be met with total disinterest. It's not the end of the world and the occasional one who turns out to be another enthusiast makes it worthwhile.

I saw my first white Daytona many years ago on the wrist of a work colleague whilst waiting for a meeting to start. He wasn't an enthusiast and commented that he was only wearing it because his usual watch had paint all over it after painting the house. He still whipped it off his wrist and handed it to me but I could tell he really didn't have anything more to say about it - which was fine.

My dad's had a GMT for years and doesn't know what the GMT hand does. If you asked him about it, he'd probably be weirded out and walk away. Is my dad a tool?

I'm guessing the guy didn't drop $12K without inquiring with his brother in law about the watch and what made it so special. He may have been weirded out by the OPs' inquiries and maybe even felt a little self conscious about wearing a Rolex. I don't think he was a tool because he didn't want to talk watches or didn't just go crazy elaborating about his watch.

Diff strokes for diff folkes.

Expectations are the only issue here.

Compliment the watch and take what you get as a response... some will be good and some not as much.

Wow...this conversation sure went in a direction I never intended! It was actually supposed to be a pretty light-hearted post. I didn't intend to paint this guy as a "tool" because he isn't a fellow watch geek. I was simply stating that I was hoping my first encounter with the unicorn (i.e., Daytona C) would've been with someone that had a passion for it. Neither of us were actually watching our kids playing at the time as the game was not scheduled to start for another hour. This will not stop me from engaging with people in the future. I do like the suggestion to break the ice with a different topic first.

to 99.9999999% of the population a watch is a watch; Rolex, PP whatever. There are only a few lunatics like us! Finding another lunatic is always difficult and seeking them out will often end in disappointment.

OP was just excited to run into what he thought was another watch enthusiast. I get it, and it was a pretty funny story.
