Have you tried one on? I thought the same until I tried on the Smurf. Maybe it looks like SS to others, but you if you’re wearing it you’ll definitely know.

So what is a Day Date classified as? It is only made in PM.

Yes. It’s excessively heavy for no functional purpose other than to say hey i blew a lot of dough. I do like the dial color options that come along with PM especially on the Daytona.

I haven't. I image the weight is pretty hefty.

For a serious sports watch such as a Submariner the best metal is gold due to its superior corrosion resistance.
There is no alternative yet until Rolex builds one made out of Pt.

Ordinary SS gets affected by seawater contrary to general belief if not properly rinsed after use, had to have the 116619LB for this reason. No other way

WG is obvious from many feet away. All Rolex are both tool watches and jewelry - buy what strikes your fancy

I don’t. I tried on many, my dad had a PM day-date. To heavy and clunky for me. I mean don’t get me wrong, a white gold sub looks good and likely good for 98 percent of folks here wearing at work or what ever.

But see I wear my watches for what ever I’m doing. Be that water sports, mountain biking, climbing/hiking, playing ball with the kids. The deal is for me and PM, I have to have the bracelet uncomfortably tight as to not flip and flop around. My 16610, is on my wrist, I forget it’s there most of the time. That’s what I want in a sport watch.

That is silly, and an unfounded claim. I had a WG Pepsi and it weighed 220 grams - very heavy/clunky and was not good to run with it on. Stainless steel is fine, and has been for the last 75 years - thousands of divers wore them and they are still functioning today without layers of corrosion.

I love the WG daytona dial options and slowly am being convinced to pick one up.. But I did have a question around gold's lack of durability. For the gold bracelets and cases do you find that scratches and dings happen rather quickly and more severely than you have seen on their SS counterparts?

I don't mind a few marks and truly believe a watch is made to be worn, but I do worry about the softness of gold and if I would regret it in the long run.

I wouldn't characterize wg as "heavy". It feels more like a gentle, warm hug of a baby panda on the wrist!!

No, after wearing gold for many years I can honestly say that in practise they scratch as easy as SS. Rolex gold is 18K and annealed, you cannot get a ding without brute force. It's hard.
Not to be compared with 24K which is indeed soft.

Basically everything that will scratch your PM will also scratch your SS. Like banging a brick wall i.e.

You wouldn't confuse a SS vs titanium watch in real life, even though they may "look the same." Same goes for SS vs WG. Internet pictures poorly convey the differences in these metals.

I also didn't understand this, until I got my Smurf.

My grail piece is the blue faced Sub in white gold and I agree with you that the white gold pieces have a very warm tone compared to the SS ones.

WG is for the 1%. It's that simple. Don't like it? Don't buy it.

Anyone can buy a SS sub...very few can buy a WG option.

SS v WG

I had a WG Pepsi and yes, there is certainly a difference in tone but it is very subtle...as in so subtle you would have to tell people it’s gold, they would assume it is steel every time unless they are a jeweler or a Rolex nerd. Don’t kid yourself, no one will have any idea.

As for the comment above: I’m not in the 1% - not by a long shot, so I don’t think that’s true at all. I have a good job and saved my money, while flipping a few other watches I acquired over the years, and eventually bought that Pepsi...which was heavy and not comfortable to me.

And no, not “anyone” can spend 5k-10k on a SS watch, that is completely untrue. I’m sorry but 99.9% of people will never own a Rolex because they don’t care. For the people who do want to own a Rolex, with modest means it can and is done on a daily basis but it is something the middle class aspires to, most people simply don’t have this much cash to spend on man jewelry.

Consider ourselves extremely lucky.
