Birth year search

I’m starting a search for my birth year watch. 1982. If you were going to choose an early 80’s Rolex, what would you go for? Then if you wanted to stay below $12K what would it be? Thanks!

I have a post going in the Vintage forum about birth year watches you may want to chine in on?

As your question, I would get a Sub. Classic holed case that is timeless and durable enough to wear daily.

Nice thread David.
Yeah, I wasn’t sure as what qualifies as “vintage” these days. I guess 1980 is already 40 years ago, haha.

Although birth year watches are interesting, I would go for a great condition watch of a model you like very much. If it happens to be birth year great. If not, you'd better have a great watch than a so-so birth year watch.

MHO.

Very interesting - I never thought about a birth year watch. I am 40 this year and getting a Rolex to mark that milestone (February). 2020, 40 years old; should be a good timepiece to pass on to someone in the family when my times done.

I have two birth year watches from the same year. 16800 and 16750. Both great watches.

For 1982, I would go 1655 Explorer 2 if the funds allowed. Failing that a Pepsi would be second choice.

That said, I bought a 1680 'red' Sub for my 40th from 1976.

I would go with a Submariner or a Sea Dweller.

Same. Are you on track with an AD to get one by February? I was hoping the 40 milestone would open doors for me at ADs, but with my bday rapidly approaching, I’m not sure if one will be available in time.

I've been in a similar predicament and want my birth year watch to be something really unique. Have been eyeing the Tridor Day-Date. What a beautiful (and unique) watch. TBH I've never actually seen one in the wild.

I’ve been casually looking at birth year watches and happen to be born in 1982 as well. I think the 5513 and 16750 are the best “vintage” models from of the year. Good examples tend to be a bit higher than $12k though

If you're not already aware, you can search the sale forum only for “1982” and get a bunch of results to get ideas of what you like best

16750 is a great birth year watch. I bought one when I turned 30 but sold it last year. Vintage is great but I hardly ever wore it, so I decided to sell. Lucky for me they shot up in value over the past couple of years.

This is a deep rabbit hole that would be very costly and may be filled with disappointing. The quality of casing, bracelet, and bezels have improved significantly. I am slightly (ok, a lot older than you). When I searched for birth year watches - the 1680 Red was extremely expensive for the value. Links were too light, had to get watch pressure tested often - because I chip the top hat like crystal. And the bracelet felt to light with hollow links.

I would strongly suggest going with 16750 with independent hour hands. Potentially out the watch on strap or newer bracelet. Be ready to find an independent watch maker because Rolex will be difficult to get service without switching out hands or dial lume with great aging.
