They're definitely still out there, sitting in drawer somewhere....

15% annual return on a watch sitting in a drawer is pretty impressive.

Looks like a cool dude.

Compare to today’s investment Daytona buyer and, well... you know where I’m going with this.

Great story and watch, as others have said looking at that sticker it’s been worn a bit

Can we flesh this case back sticker issue out a little more:

I’ve seen many an old truly NOS watch that has been unworn and in a safe. The case back stickers look pristine. This sticker has seen a lot of wrist wear. So I wonder what the explanation would be outside the obvious? He wore it around the house for years but not outside? Wore it to bed?! Just doesn’t make sense.

To me it’s quite obvious.

It’s not unworn.

For anyone to even try & say it is, is talking nonsense.

Wow. What a great story! Good for him.

I doubt modern pieces will ever attain this level of value down the road. 99% of these watches were worn as intended, so finds like this are extremely rare. So many Daytonas are sitting in a safe now I doubt they will ever be hard to find unworn 40 years down the road.

You guys are being too literal about the reference to "unworn." First of all, it looks like he tried to take the sticker off at some point, and I'm sure he wore it a little when he first got the watch, then tucked it away for decades. The case-back sticker looks like it's got a combination of light wear and serious age on it. That's all. These old stickers don't take much to wear them down a little. Back in the day, some ADs would remove the sticker for the client and stick it on the guarantee paper or on the inside of the little vinyl folder, to preserve it. That just didn't happen in this case.

Really besides the point. What an amazing story.

So from what did the case back sticker become that worn if he never used it?

I’m super glad no shady watch dealer has had the opportunity to scam the watch out of his hands though.

Yep, and it appears to show stretch in the bracelet as well. I'd love to have that exact watch, but it is indeed worn.

Wow what a story. The myth/legend/fable of a woman finding a Paul Newman Daytona in her father’s couch that he bought on Craigslist is still my favorite though ;)

Not convinced by the comedy fall. He must have had some idea of how much it was worth. Even someone with that much hair is capable of doing a simple Google search...

Maybe he'd seen the Paul Newman's PN auction price, and he fell over because he was shocked at how low the estimated price of his own PN was.
