Dial variations for the 5513

For some unknown reason the 5513 has become my favourite reference and during the 30+ year production run of the 5513 there have been many different dials.

I am trying to understand the differences and chronology involved and have been piecing together the following table. This is not all my information, only some of it is. Mil subs not taken into account here.

gilt underline "Swiss"
gilt underline white"Swiss"
gilt 3 - 5- 9 Explorer dial
gilt dial 200M with small =
gilt dial 200M with large = (and bart simpson coronet)
matt dial 200M with small =
matt dial 600f with open 6
matt dial 600f with open 6 and serif on hour markers
Matt maxi type I

"Submariner" on top of depth rating

matt Maxi type II
matt maxi type III
matt maxi type IV
matt maxi type V
matt dial 600M with closed 6
matt dial submariner above / 600m open 6
matt dial submariner above / 600m closed 6/"S" very flat
glossy dial and white gold markers - 200m=660 ft seen, closed six
glossy dial WG markers 660ft=200m , closed six

The descriptions "gilt dial 200M with small =
gilt dial 200M with large = (and bart simpson coronet)
"

are not mine and I am keen to know what a small and large "=" are? Also what a Bart Simpson coronet looks like. Of the two pics below is one a small = and one a large =?

Any ideas where to find more information on this is greatly appreciated or any information/corrections to the above that anyone can add here also appreciated.

My old type two is in that link. Ed's site is one of the best on the net. His detailed descriptions and things to look for can be invaluable info when purchasing a vintage piece. =) maverick

I have seen so many different dials for the 5513 it is like custom wheels, so many to choose from. I have a book on the Submariner watches with different dials, and that is where I draw my conclusions when it comes to fakes or repainted. Orchi has some good information on the Submariners also.

Here's my Maxi 1...
Is this really a Maxi 1?? To me it looks like the previous generation dials as at the MK1 the bar of the "f" and "t" in ft should be aligned and the coronet has a more elongated shape...

Interesting. I did some investigative work on my own, and found this model, said to be rare circa 1977 tho I know it's not a 5514:

http://www.worldlywatches.com/privatecollection.php

http://www.worldlywatches.com/enlarg..._enlarg_12.JPG

Also it appears just as a 1976 dial would appear in that "ft" aspect:

I'll get in touch with the well respected vendor from our Forum whom originally was sent my 5.2 mil Rollie for verification back in 2008.

Here's mine...

Type V maxi...

The last maxi and the only matte dial where Submariner is printed wider than the depth rating, according to Doubleredseadweller.com

Cheers!

Here's the dial on my 1967 5513...I am thinking that this is the Bart Simpson Crown, no? The crown is stubbier than the later versions. I'm curios as well.

Hi Steve, sorry but yours is not a Bart dial, the coronet on a Bart dial is a lot shorter.

Will see if I can find some pics :)

Here you go

I think so too as I have seen 1.9M serials with MF dials. Yours may have been swapped out at a service??

I didn't know their was so many difference in Rolex dials. Why is that, don't they have a pattern they work from to make things uniform.

The 5513 was produced for over 20 years, would be quite bland to have the same watch with no differences for that length of time. Dials were produced by singer and beyeler(sp?) which might account for variations as well

The changes likely occurred when different dial makers were used and/or when different aspects of the dial were meant to be emphasized.
