Serious Red Sub Trade situation...
Ok, these types of threads typically make everyone crazy, but I would like to hear some opinions.
I have an opportunity to obtain a grail watch- a very good condition Red Sub. It's been in a safe since approx. 1981. The problem is, I in order to pay for it I have to sell my GMT 1675, my white sub 1680, and possibly my recent find, my oysterdate 6565.... Guys, would you trade those three for a Red sub with a fully documented history, warranty paper, original purchase receipt, manuals, boxes, hang tag, etc... I will post more photos this week of the RedSub.... stay tuned...

I don't know about that one...the Red looks awesome, clean, and I love the slight fade on the bezel insert. But your 1675 and your 1680 are beauties.
I'd keep what you have. But then again, I'm not as enamored with Red Subs as everyone else is, so I'll probably be in the minority here. |

Hard to answer. You have 3 great watches IMO. Is the red Sub that important to you? Also, I think all 3 watches for the trade is too much.
Good luck. |

That's a great trio you have there. I like a bit of variety in the collection and having the ability to rotate watches.
But if that Red Sub has you under it's spell, sounds like it's got everything you could want. Flip what you have and ... Good luck Jules |

Seems like a great find for the Red Sub. A Red Sub with fully loaded accessories is surely a rare bird. As for the trade, I would personally take the jump if the Red Sub really sings to you when strapped on.
Best of luck. |

Essentially you'd be trading a 1675 for a line of red text, and a 6565 for some boxes. I wouldn't.

if the Red sub was in really good shape , all original , case lugs are really fat and not over polished, and its a complete REAL set then i would take the trade. Real complete sets are very valuable and are getting hard to find. While the models you have now are a lot more readily available. Please get more detailed pics of the red sub and goodluck with whatever choice you make. Either way you cant go wrong.

Noooooo don't do it. You have three beauties for one watch. Grant it she is nice, however as others have said is the one line of red worth it! look hard at what you have they are gorgeous watches. All hands match the dial and in fantastic shape. Just my two cents! Good luck on whatever you decide.

+1. Red looks sweet but I'd and on to what you got, which collectively look sweeter. Let us know what you decide!

I wouldn't do it. The watch is feet first, not worth the extra funding just for box and papers. Unless you're a collector and will treat the watch like a collectible......but what's the fun in that?

If it was m-first, it would cost even more. Doesn't mean the f-f is not 'worth' the market value, which is dictated by… the market! RE the trade, it depends how badly you want a great red (and a set) against what you already have. Only you know that. But I do know that if you have to have a red, it won't end until you get one. So, if the one offered is a peach (looks great in that shot), then why not? You can always get a nice 1675 again.

No way. As nice as the red sub is the 1675 is a Beauty and so is your other sub. You would struggle to replace those in Their condition

Only you can decide on the value you place on having a full set red sub.
For me it's worth it as they are relatively hard to find and the collector in me always wants a full set over a loose watch providing the condition is the same. But they are not impossible to find and you see them popping up every now and then, albeit at a premium. So the sensible option would be to wait and save. But you also need to consider how easy it was for you to pick-up the other watches and whether you enjoy having a few watches in your collection rather than just the one. You also need to consider that because of the increased price, there will be a smaller market for Red Subs with full sets and collectors of full sets will generally be far more rigorous in their evaluation of the watch itself so a future trade may take longer if you change your mind. If you're a pragmatic type of person who doesn't tend to have an emotional bond with your watches, then replacing the other watches in the future will be much easier than finding another great condition full set red sub. |

Things to consider -
First, are you getting back the value on the three that you already purchased? Hopefully not losing money. If you are comfortable with the price on the Red Sub, and had not purchased the three you own, (thus, the money was in the bank)... I would then say - GO FOR IT! |

Are you a collector or hobbyist? My impression is you are a hobbyist. With that in mind, is the red text and boxes worth the GMT and the 6565? For me personally it isn't but then, I like to wear my watches and if they get dings so be it.

Red subs were my "grail" when I first started collecting. They just don't have the allure to me anymore. Someday down the road I will get one, but like you've already pointed out, it takes 3 watches to equal one. And I know I'd be happier with the 3 than the one. The whole point of collecting these to me is being able to get rid of the ones that don't sing to me, and replace them with ones that do. And in your case where I'd have 3 daily wearers, to trade for a watch that really wouldn't be worn daily for fear of destroying it just wouldn't make sense.

Would you trade your three daily cars for a Porsche? Maybe...

Not for me. I never understood the double value for a bit of red paint ( but that's me). I might have a red one day but I won't trade my GMT in with my 1680 to fund it. Good luck

all things equal I like the option above keep the gmt, sell others plus $. that said it is
relatively easy to find a nice 1680 & 1675 but not a Red sub with all documentation so as to increasing value may be better choice. I don't think you can go "wrong" with either option. good luck! M |
