I agree, these full sets are rare...

True, you will have one red sub, but will you wear it or will it remain a safe queen? ;)
I have a handfull of other Rolex watches, airkings, datejusts, oyster's, etc...
None as nice as these three...

Good points, thanks for participating in my mid-life crisis journey to buy an very expensive watch that I don't need...

IF all goes as planned, I am going to pickup the watch on Thursday for photos and further review.....

Sorry for getting to the party late. I am with Vincent on this one. Here is why i would say go for it, IF the watch meets all of your requirements. 1) It is your grail piece 2) It is a REd sub, and while the paint color may be the only difference than a white 1680, the RED paint is what makes it more rare and collectible.

If you can sell your other pieces to make this financially happen, than i say, "do it." You will be able to find another of the others, because they are not as rare.

It's obviously a grail piece for you, therefore you need to give up on any logical approach and just go for it. I have never held a red in my hand and that's probably a good thing. Have fun with it.

Get it or it'll always be in the back of head. Period. If there's a way to not scrifice your beatiful 1675, that would be even better.

You have already Sub.1680 also know the feeling, OK except red., I would never get rid of the 3 pieces beautiful watches, to get 1. Save up also buying a Red Sub. DO NOT SELL. The decision is yours ........... but - NO

Update, not a good one...

My friend decided to hold on the the fully documented red sub....
He heard about the Christie's auction... So no red for me this week.

After this experience I will seek a lesser expensive Red..., that makes more sense for me...

Sorry for the hype with no pics...

Things happen for a reason. You will find the red your looking for.
how much was he asking for the full set?

The red sub pictured in my original post has been sitting in my safe; yes I bought it recently, but it's a museum piece, and I don't have the desire to devalue it by wearing it...

Stay tuned...

It's not a NOS safe-queen - so, wear the hell out of it and enjoy it! How will that reduce its value?

Do what you want mate as long as it makes you happy. I have a DSSD I bought for diving that rarely sees the light of day, but I enjoy having it and knowing it's in my safe ready to wear. You may change your mind in the future and decide that it's time to start wearing that Sub...

Congrats on picking that up! Did you trade any or all of the 3 watches to acquire the Red? It's your watch to do with as you wish, of course, but I would not be able to resist wearing it.

Original..

The original owner kept the box in a dry place, and kept the watch off his wrist...

Get the red and replace the others later. It's very hard to find a red in that kind of condition complete. The others can be replaced much easier. Good luck.

Well, it looks like you made your decision and found a very fine specimen. Nice work! It really is a nice looking red.

In hindsight, and just for fun, I wonder how feasible this alternative would have been - keep all three of the other watches and then just source a vintage red dial? These dials come up for sale from time to time in various conditions, and since you already owned a pristine white 1680, that would serve as the base.

Whenever you got the itch for the red, have your red dial swapped in and store the white dial in your watchbox or safe until you decide to go back to the white. Obviously it began its life as a white and is still a white, but at least that way you can enjoy the red whenever you want it without having to sacrifice the white. It's a 2-fer.

Personally, I would have done that since you can have two subs out of one base watch. Sort of like swapping dials and hands in the Exp II 16570 to have both black and polar.

Just a thought.

The original owner kept the set and watch very nice. The watch got plenty of wrist time by the looks of that gorgeous insert.
