Prefer the modern with sapphire crystals for the water.

I have had my 1665 for 21 years. I pretty much never take it off. If I had taken it off every time I did something physical or water related I would no longer own this watch. It would have been misplaced or stolen... no doubt. Because I didn't realize the value of the watch until recently, I did not treat it with the care that a 10k+ watch deserves. In fact, I have pretty much put this watch through the ringer. Anyway, in the 21 years I have had it in my possession it has had one Rolex service and a great clean up recently by Ricci. I still never take it off. As long as you trust the band.. you should trust the watch.

Karbo,

Here is the before and after. I had a replacement crystal on the watch from God knows when up until this past winter.

My '73 5513 that was serviced by Rolex developed the same rust in the same area. I brought it back to Rolex, and they replaced the crystal and did a warranty service two years ago.

I never dove with the watch, or swam with it - just washed it gently with soapy water to clean it. So, there was something wrong for it to leak.

If the damned things could go down 660 feet in the 70's (or 1,000 for the Sea Dwellers), after service/testing, why would they NOt be able to go down 9 feet in a pool today??

I may have to reevaluate my stance on doing everything while wearing my 1978 1665. A couple weeks ago my watch started to slow down noticeably. The following week it came to a complete stop. My service was done within the last year, so I contacted the watchmaker and sent it back to him under the warranty of the recent work. He fixed the watch with no questions asked except whether or not I drove a motorcycle. He said that there were screws in the watch that had become so loose that they interfered with the movement. I believe he also mentioned one that had come completely out. Anyway, I do not ride a motorcycle often enough to be the issue. I would guess that running several times a week is the culprit. I hate taking my watch off daily for the fear of eventually losing it. I also don't want it sitting in a safe unused. I am not really looking for an answer. I am sure I will just continue what I have been doing for the last 20+ years and hope for the best. Just thought I would share.

I also ride motorbikes daily, and work on them. All while wearing my DRSD.
Never had a problem wearing any watch due to riding motorcycles for almost 40 years.

It's fine until it's not - watches don't leak until they do - then you will be second guessing yourself for a long time.

I dove to 150ft with my 5512 when it was new in the early 60's, and to 225 ft with my 1680 in the 70's when it was new.

I wouldn't even consider swimming now with my DRSD even though it's been serviced and pressure tested by Bob Ridley. As he explained to me, all you have to do is bump the crystal against something and the next time the watch goes in the water, there goes the dial, and half the value of the watch.

Just not worth the risk that something could go wrong! JMO

Exactly... He also explained to me over the phone that Vintage cases can warp over time which will effect the water resistance. Why even risk it?
