5500 Explorer dial

Hi All,

I came across a 1967 5500 air king with the explorer dial, which is a gilt dial. Could you please comment if it is genuine? Thank You

Not original, and fake hands.

Awful.

So, please tell us where it is and/or who is selling it.

I would like to know who it is and how they are describing it.

Thankyou.

5500 Explorer is something I'd avoid unless you have some concrete evidence it left the factory that way (but paperwork can be forged!) or you accept that it could be redial etc and pay accordingly.

I thought about 5500 Explorer at one point, but quickly reached that conclusion and went for a 1016 myself.

What did you think of my request to tell us who is selling the watch shown, where, and how they are describing it?

They seem fair questions to assist the forum where you have yourself been saved from buying a bad watch.

5500 is also 34mm which is a tad too small for me. I can’t go less than 36mm

it is being listed on a japanese website with japanese description, however, I dont know japanese at all, I only rely on google translate on that.

If you look up one of the well known shops in japan, nakano (jackroxd) you will be able to find the watch.

The description basically reads

"popular Explorer-type dial (redone)"

Model name section is saying "Explorer-type" then Air-King.

So if you are a Japanese watch collector reading that page, you'd know it is not a factory Explorer Ref 5500. Are they maybe hoping someone will think it's a real Explorer and buy it as such? Maybe yes. Are they super actively hiding it? Not really.

Asking price before tax is about $3,251.16 so that's also indicating they are not pushing that as a real Explorer reference.
