Which 5204 would you choose??

Hi,
I am thinking to buy a Patek Philippe 5204, but the problem is I don’t know which version I like because I like the white bright platinum on the one hand and I like to see details in the dial... so I don’t know which version is the best for me ?
How would you choose?

I've always liked the black P dial, very dynamic and sexy, also best hides the upside down MP which slightly bothers me.

First series production 5204p white dial. Black is nice but for this particular ref imo should go for the white. Can also get it cheaper than the black variant too

Platinums
White then black.

White dials become exceptional when dark hands and markers are used.

The black is very elegant, is it possible to wear it with jeans casual?
I think the white one has a much more casual look, and you can see the dial details better, or what do you think??

I wear the black one regularly with jeans and a leather jacket. I think it looks fantastic. The hands and hour indexes with lumiscent coating gives it a very sporty touch.

Sadly they killed the 5204P with Black dial before I could get one, and didn't replace it with anything this year.

Hopefully they roll out another platinum variant next year (only the 5204/1R remains in production right now).

I do not think they will produce another version of the 5204P. They produced the 5204P white and black dial versions for quite some time. Some existing owners of the 5204P will even say they over-produced it compared to the 5004. Patek cetainly over-produced the 5270 and 5170.

White dial for me, I tried a black dial on and it felt very formal. Maybe a brown strap could tone that down. Although my main gripe was its thickness, I thought it was quite awkward on the wrist.

I voted for the white dial P because I generally prefer white dials over black dials unless just time only watches.

I would not say these were overproduced but rather the anticipated demand was just not there for these pieces which resulted in an abundance of inventory. One can debate the merits of the styles but the main problem I think, is the current market is so soft on complicated PM strap watches and has been for a while. Any 5170 or 5270 is a great opportunity now if you can swing the purchase as a long term acquisition.

I have a 5204P-011 (black dial) and a 5004R, as well as a couple of other CH27-70 variants.

I expected to love the 5204-010 (white dial) because of its blackened hands and indexes on the warm, gold dial plate. But I found the blackened elements hard to read and distracting... unbalanced. I found none of the unique character and pop that is so special on my 5250G.

The black dial version, for which I had PP make a dark blue, extra thick strap, has wonderful character and presence. The brushed steel chrono hands sealed the look for me. The lustrous black oxidized gold dial plate has beautiful texture, like an FP Journe black label.

The 5204 is beautifully finished by today's standards at Patek, and the movement is extraordinary. I feel Theirry's heavy hand is apparent, though not as awkwardly as on the 5270 saga.

The 5004 is up on its own shelf, IMHO.

Sounds, that the right strap is the link for a great casual looking 5204.
Do you have some photos from your piece on that strap?

A post that shows some real insight into the brand. (Missed by many who are still crying about Nautilus). Thank you.

Firstly I agree that the 5004 will come to be regarded as a very very special watch some years from now. Adding a ratrapante to the base Lemania was extremely difficult and it limited production...dial is beautiful and yes it’s 36mm, so what? Fabulous watch at PPs pinnacle.

The inference from your post is Pateks finishing is not like it was “yesterday” - do you think that’s true? Although you think your 5204 is up there with an FPJ?

Also I agree that Thierry has certainly made a mess of a few references. Would you mind elaborating on your heavy hand comment?

Had the opportunity to try one on in rose gold last year. Loved it and also feels fantastic on the wrist.
