In the US you can't charge a percent or contingent fees for audit work; it must be a flat fee or hourly fee(s). If there are many locations that need to be audited, inventory counts, etc., then yes, the fees will be higher. Just like auditing a one-store company vs. Walmart. Of course there are synergies, so one store audit is X, but stores 2-5 may be .75X

I was an employee of one of the big firms, so I just collected my reg paycheck, not sure what the overall engagement fee was.

Depends which AD but no more than 2%. AD alone clocks ~35% and the watches got small legs nowadays so they sell themselves which means ADs could be lowering their commission.
