I don't know that its as easy as just a percentage of sale price. I'm thinking that the salesman would get a higher percentage on a full price Day-Date than a discounted 26mm Oyster Perpetual.

A lot of people don't agree that this should be done. But I do it. And it is generally reciprocated.

Where I live, I would have slipped a c note for a low cost desirable model, or for working a discount on a common model. More for a higher cost. In NY, cost of living is higher. So, I don't know. But whatever you do will be appreciated. It's not the amount, but the fact that you did it.

I’ve never asked my SA but I wouldn’t be sure that all AD salespeople work on commission. I know the SA’s at mine “share” the supply of waitlist pieces and they also seem to deal with walk-in customers as equals, no one rushing to grab them at the door.

Not every company pays commission. I know of two in the USA that don’t (and they are not no-name stores).

There’s nothing wrong with showing a small token of gratitude where appropriate like if you received something desirable or rare or a great deal. The old ‘being a customer is my gift to them’ attitude cannot die soon enough. Remember you are talking about sales associates that will often earn less in a year than the watches you are buying, so at the very least showing some humility goes a long way.

that's ^ funny...
If you want to 'tip' your sales associate, by all means... but why, you've done that already.
If for some reason that the AD went above and beyond simply getting you your FULL PRICED piece, gratitude is in order... otherwise they've only done their job.
please remember... 'TIP' means, TO INSURE PROMPTITUDE.
this automatic tipping thing is for the birds (Mr. Pink)

Say it was a highly desirable model a yg green Daytona or a ss nautilus

Would 5% of sales price suffice? If their commission is 5 % do I give the same amount and is that generous?

If you have made the personal and unprompted decision to give a little something to them, 5% is most definitely generous* and they would undoubtedly be very grateful.

*Unless you are flipping. In which case that number should be 20% of the profits

I don't think they would get a percentage of the sales price but rather a percentage of the profit

I’m sure SA’s pay structure defers from store to store. Probably a combination of salary/comm.

I’ve never tipped a sales agent....never saw a need. I keep a good relationship without doing it.

Most are flat rate salary with on-target YE bonuses of anywhere between 5-15% gross to ensure they stay a year. If they leave, they get no bonus.

There's no selling anymore. You're order taking.

The problem I see is creating an environment where watches can only be had with kickbacks to the ADs and their employees. Schemers will figure ways to ever increase the "fee" to play the game. If and when the market turns, the notion of tipping will be a forgotten notion in the watch industry. Common sense should prevail. If an AD hand delivers you a whatever item you just bought and it is delivered by a store employee I would tip the delivery person for the extra effort and prompt service.

Class.

Can't buy it or rent it. You have it or you don't. And OP, you have class.

I've never worked at an AD, but I did audit one back in 2000ish, which included reviewing commission calculations and payments.

I don't remember exact percents, but I do remember that watch sales, including Rolex, were a lower commission (usually half) than jewelry. The total paid was also dependent upon which SA it was, what type of jewelry (high end or regular) and specific watch brands had more or less commission tied to them.

I do remember one SA got over $40k for selling a pair of earrings that were close to $900k.

It was fun doing the inventory count and seeing all that crazy expensive stuff! Oh, and they still didn't have any SS Daytonas!

It depends on the dealer, but it’s important to remember that the dealer commission on Rolex is generally less than normal jewelers brands

I’m just curious how much of a tip did you get for your audit? Is it a percentage of audited assets, or a fixed amount (1 store audit is x, two store audit is 2x).
