I gifted my wife a vintage (circa 1920s) Rolex for looking after me following a recent accident. She was delighted with it.

I see no issue gifting ‘used’ watches provided the condition is something you’d consider acceptable for yourself.

My GF was pretty happy with the used watch I got her.

My grandfather wanted to gift me a vintage Patek Philippe - I told him I cannot accept this. It is not socially acceptable ;-)

Depends on who the gift is for and what the situation is. Immediate family members I think is fine for used watches, but as presents to friends, extended family, etc. that would be a tad odd.

Same goes for the situation. If it is meant for a special occasion, something new is better. If you are simply handing it off to your kids to wear then why not.

I have several pre-owned pieces and personally enjoy thinking about my watches’ prior lives... Rolexes are made to last

My heirs will have to settle for used.

With some luck all the watches will be vintage, even the newer ones.

I am not sure if you are serious or not. In some cultures the insult of refusing a gift like that would be about as far from acceptable as you could get...

I think it's completely acceptable. In fact, it can be even more valuable than new depending on the history.

A nice watch, whether five years old or fifty, can be a very nice gift.

All my kids have been gifted watches that I have worn and they have seen me wear through the years. They were all delighted to get them as both an entry into watch collecting and a connection to me. I think it is a great practice.

Depends on what relationship you have to the giftee, whether the giftee is a watch person, what kind of watch it is (modern vs vintage), is there significance to it being used. For example, a watch of a famous person whom a giftee admires is always OK, whether it is modern or vintage. Vintage is also always OK. Maybe the watch being used is significant (it is a watch their relative wore, or this is a watch from a year they got married, had first kid, etc) then it should be OK. If the giftee is a watch person and likes some specific model that's not produced anymore, it is also fine. And finally if you are related, gifting your own watch wouldn't feel weird either. Apart from those, I think gifting a used watch is weird.

Yes in at least 2 situations.

1. The watch they want is no longer in production.
2. It was yours first and the fact that you wore it will have some sentimental value.

Each one of them cherish the gift.

Actually the "gifting" was a big reason I got into watches. When my father passed away he left me nothing of sentimental value. He left me lots of other things I will never forget, but he never bought or wore jewelry. Not even a wedding band. So I wanted to change this for my kids. It was a Grand Slam.
Good for you
I think a preowned watch can be a great gift. If there is some real thought behind it...even better.

I tend to agree.

I might add that I would limit it to family.

In the real world, there's a big difference between giving your used watch as a gift vs. giving a used watch as a gift. The two watches might be the same reference, but they are not the same gift.

Depends. If they are NOT a watch person, it might ignorantly seem odd to get a used watch (if you bought gray for someone). If it’s your watch and your passing it down, that’s a different story all together. More. Info. Needed.

I hope it’s not gauche to gift a used watch. I’ve got a 36mm Datejust 16234 w a Tiffany stamped dial that I just picked up for my wife. If she doesn’t like it, then I guess I’ll have to wear it!

All 5 stepsons seemed happy with the pre-owned Rolexes we gave them.

https://www.rolexforums.com/showthre...light=Explorer

Rick lives out of town so was not available for the group pic but we bought him a pre-owned Explorer as a retirement gift.

Vintage is cool. I don’t know about second hand modern references unless the recipient also hangs out on TRF.
