it's just on an altogether different level.
one that i will never even comprehend.
let's not forget that the watch is ugly.

These auction prices are ridiculous, seems like the auction houses only focus on record breaking.
Of course, good for them but the buyers are getting ludicrous paying that much.

Some things I really don’t get.

Ppl these days thinking that a Hulk/ BLNR/ SD43 or Blue SKyD will reach these levels and paying crazy prices for them all when there are 1000s upon 1000s of them made - you just have to laugh at them all. LOL
Some folks think Hulks will be fetching $3.2m?
Bizarre.

That's an incredible price for a Rolex that's barely a vintage. I wonder what the original sale price was when the first owner acquired it? For a watch like this to become collectable and assumingly very many multiples of its original retail price is astounding. Maybe a bidding war between Musk, Bezos, and Rolex.

I'm really wondering what's the point and why people value this watch this high. So let's say two bidders, if bidder one would have stopped at 1.5 million it would have sold for that?

Seems like people rather spend a lot of money and break a record than get something special and interesting for a rather good price. Else, what's the point?

Getting this piece for 3.2 million, doesn't guarantee you it will go 4-5-6- million the next time. So where is the investment value?

Rolex Zenith Daytona sells for 3,200,000 USD

That style (type 4) was used earlier than 1999. First, in the 16518 in 1992, then in the 16519 in 1997.

In fact, a platinum zenith powered Daytona given to the president of Rolex Patrick Heiniger went on the block in 2018.

And he gave multiple ones to the Gobbi’s

https://watchesbysjx.com/2018/10/mos...um-zenith.html

So another may come to auction again.

I agree they aren’t investments in general. There are scarce models that do appreciate over time except during significant economic downturns.

Of interest is that the bespoke Henniger Pt. Daytona sold for $871,000USD in 2018. Now, a different one for $3+MM.

I’d say when a 3rd, 4th or 5th 16516 comes to auction it’s going to go for a strong price absent a depression.

Platinum Zenith Daytonas were never sold in shops. A handful were made and so far only two surfaced AFAIK.

Another up for auction now, quite similar to the blue Daytona beach. Wonder If it is a stone dial or lacquer dial.

That’s beautiful - Sotheby’s is listing it as a lacquer dial. Thanks for reminding me this is coming up!

Yes, noticed Sothebys listing it as lacquer dial, but looks very similar to the turquoise beach that I thought was a stone dial.

Seems obvious to me that ALL platinum Daytona watches will be $3 million + in short order!

if that isn’t obvious

This is interesting... I (speculate) suspect this is someone trying to get (hot) money out of Hong Kong. Is this the year HKG will be forced to drop their USD peg? I bet this piece surfaces again in Europe or N. America...

Correct.
Jeez. It's just another watch made of common materials. So what if it is the only one made?

Wow, this is pretty amazing. An ice blue Stella dial Platinum Daytona. I wonder if anyone knew this variation existed prior. Thanks for sharing
