GS Night Birch - SLGH017

Don't know if someone already posted. I did a quick search and didn't see anything pop out.

Does anyone know more about this release other than what's in the article?

Although I love the White Birch, I'm a little worried that GS may overdue the dial pattern to death. This seems to be the black dial version of the SLGH005 and SLGH011.

Wow, in full titanium, nonetheless! Love this version even more than the original white birch. Exceptional.

I need to see what this looks like in person but if this is more black than gray I’d definitely consider buying this.

I'm waiting for the red "Burning Birch" and the Tiffany Blue "Frozen Birch".

And I'm only 1/2 kidding.

I like titanium GS and the new movement. It's a winner for me.

I know you’re sort of kidding but I’m one of those Grand Seiko fanboys who likes that they offer a lot of variations of the same models. I think it’s pretty cool that if you like a particular watch but not the dial you may eventually get the one you want because they release so many of them. I understand the criticism but for me personally I like when a brand does this. Although they do really need to stop with the stupid nature inspiration stuff. The marketing on that is getting ridiculous.

Very nice watch and another one to further confuse me. Grand Seiko and Seiko get the award for the most interesting releases week to week. So many watches, so many choices. It is always fun and interesting with the brand.

What’s not to like?

Well, maybe the price, but GS isn’t what it used to be. It is what it is.

That and I still find the “80 HOURS” unnecessary. Overall, really nice. The Ti with dark birch dial is striking.

As much as I loved the White Birch on paper, I wouldn't buy it as I rarely wear light/white/silvery dialed watches- the Green Birch, although striking, is a little too "of the moment".
This one though looks gorgeous, wearable and classically modern, though I cringe at that phrase, even as I type it...

Looking forward to seeing it in real life....

Appreciate the reduced movement / watch thickness.

Ran into a sticking point with the unusually wide bracelet.

100%. I had the original ltd blue dial and moved it on quickly. Felt the 22mm was way too large for the 40mm case. Needed to be 20mm.

And now of course, 7-8 dials later I’m over this otherwise great watch bc of the bracelet

Same for me. I really wanted to love my SLGH003, but couldn't get past the bracelet and never found a strap that worked well.

Completely agree. The dial is beautiful but the lug to case proportion feels really janky to me. If this had a 20mm lug span and no-date (want this to be all dial) and a better bracelet I'd be really excited about it.

Yeah it is a weird design choice but they’re sticking with it for some reason

It’s not a show stopper for me, it’s a bit like the DJ36 having a 20mm width bracelet.

I like the date, especially how they executed it with the framing and white numerals/black background contrast. It breaks up the blackness of the dial. That would get....hmmm....too boring? I like the how the date pops, but that is just me.

On the lug spacing, I don't mind it. It reminds me of how ALS made the junction from case to strap/bracelet on the Odysseus extra wide....almost the with of the case itself.

It led many to dislike it in pictures. But if you are lucky enough to have seen one in the flesh or wear one on your writs, there is a difference.

I don't have any issues with this execution by GS.

I initially thought the original was a 36mm watch when the very first pictures started coming out. The bracelet just looked too wide for it to be anything else. Even now, looking at the above, my brain says that’s a dj36 sized watch. I’ve no idea why it was okayed during the design process.

What is it about the bracelet? I don't like those 2 lines going down the sides of the center link, but I do like this bracelet more than most GS bracelets. Their SBGN001/3/5 bracelets I do love though (aside from the polished sides). They remind me of a more classic oyster-type bracelet, which is overall my favorite type of bracelet.

I love the dial and the overall design but little concerned about titanium resistance to scratching. Does anyone know if this is true. I’ve read some owners of other GS models made from titanium were not happy with how easily the watch scratches. Appreciate the input .

I never heard that before. I have the SBGA413 and I never had that problem.

Bracelet on this "evolution 9" series is a major let-down. If evolution means moving backward, then yes, GS has achieved an evolution.

New movement looks nice. Sadly, they are still advertising "High beat 36000" and "80 Hours" on the front of the dial. It does add some balance to the text of the logo, but I think just leaving it out would look nice too, a la SBGW231 (which is a nearly perfect dial).

On a side note I've seen some anecdotal stories about the new movement running a fair bit inaccurate, +10 spd or so. That's disappointing.

I think it looks good!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzNN1tKWRM0&t=179s

some people aren’t a fan of the bigger bracelet but I don't mind it, adds to some heft, the snowflake was just so thin in the bracelet to me.

I had my name down since the announcement with my local AD. The first two arrived. Was torn, but I ended up passing. The SLGH005 still grabs me more. Some interesting notes: titanium bracelet uses pins/sleeves, not screws; bracelet links are sort of round on the backside (SLGH005 does not).
