Wow, albeit a terrible thing that happened I'm certainly glad to hear you wore a helmet and that this wasn't much worse (like it could've been). Wishing you a speedy recovery

Sorry to hear that. I have been putting more and more miles on my road bike (and mountain bike) since this Covid business and it’s a bit scary to think about the risks that can take place at 30+ mph. I also worry about crashing with the clipless pedals where it can drag the knees down into the pavement if one crashes. Despite the risks, I am a strong believer that cycling is among the healthiest activities as we age compared to running where it beats up the joints.

Every time I see a bike or ski helmet like this while working ski or bike patrol, I think about what would have happened without it.

If I told someone to take a modern helmet and smash it into a concrete block until it cracked, most of the time it can't be done.

Another thing to consider; nearly all non-cyclists believe that the faster you’re traveling on a bike, the worse the crash is. Every cyclist knows the inverse to be true. Moral of the story, don’t think you’re safe because you’re “just cruising.”

Gotta admit this has got me helmet shopping.

Be safe, all. Between COVID-19, murder hornets, a possible hurricane in Hawaii - 2020 is shaping up to be one crazy year.

That's cold, man.

OP, glad you survived and are on the road to recovery. Best wishes.

I hit a deer critter once on my motorbike. Scared the bejeezes out of me (I'm sure it didn't do him any good either). I was able to stay up, and unscathed physically although I eventually lost the desire to ride and gave it up, permanently.

I am not preaching to no one about wearing a helmet as we all have our reasons one way or the other, but myself would never ever consider going out on my ride without one.. I am so use to wearing one I know no different..

The fluid volume is replaced in a healthy person within hours. The cells lost in the blood take a few days. Your doc might put you on iron replacement if the blood loss was moderate.

Good idea. Any helmet subjected to a hard impact should be tossed, even if damage isn't obvious.

All the best BR - hope you heal quickly! Yes I have spent a lot of money in the past on top of the range Giro helmets which I like and it is money well spent. The more you spend the lighter they are with better ventilation. You wouldn’t skimp on your watches guys so don’t skimp on a good helmet. Giro even give a large discount on a new helmet if you send them the old crash damaged one!

I used to keep my bashed motorcyle helmets...as a reminder.

How are you feeling? Still a bit stiff?

I see you like an occasional beer, how about a couple of pints of Guinness, might help with the iron replacement too.

Not a very good day here for me as a heavy dose of vertigo when I set up this am and fell right back on the bed.. Only bad when i transition from setting to laying or laying to setting. Was reading here on WEBMD and possibly whacking my head on the pavement has something to do with it as I have ever ever had this before... Only happen this morning and this is the 5th day after the crash..

I am healing nicely and all of a sudden this... !

Did they do a CT on your head after the crash? You might want to get rechecked.

Yes they did one of those and didn't say anything about any issues or bad news.. It sure feels like some type of vertigo but no headaches, no blurred vision, no ringing in my ears, and think all my wits are about me :) (hopefully)

Could be a post-concussion syndrome. If other symptoms develop, a recheck would be in order. Common advice is to drink adequate fluids. Minimize alcohol. Avoid rapid head movements. Rest.

My motto is: NO helmet, no ride. Simple as that, because accidents happen where you LEAST expect them. Usually, on a well traveled path close to the end of the ride.

This afternoon after cleaning and soaking all the dried up blood, hair and skin from the helmet, I never noticed how the helmet has 2 pretty deep cracks and lots of deep scratching where my head must have dragged on the road before i came to a stop...
