meeting with watch buddies

yesterday chunkythebulldog and danestaff came over to see me in vienna to discuss the current state of affairs around watches, beers, steaks etc.....
and of course to find ways to save the fat ninja from a serious unnamed disease, which shows its ugly face in a growing RM-buying madness. we have good hope that the fat boy will get out of this without serious bodily and mental harm, but the situation is still on the edge:::)))
we went into patek and rolex ADs, all was fine - also since dane did not wear his orange crocs:::)))
chunky wore his wonderful 5712A, dane the 5968A on the black strap and i could borrow my wife's 5170P.
thanks for the great day!!!!

Sounds like you guys had a fun time, and some great watches there. No crocs, but who was wearing the red shoe?!

Blows my mind how a guy with red shoes is not interested in RM.

This is smaller than a 5711

I hope I get the purple...if not the white...

It’s just a fun watch :). Nothing more than time only. I don’t actually know what those lines are for tbh.

I was just trying to emphasize that it’s not just the $$$ amount of the initial spend on the watch that maters but also the exit rate when I get bored.

The 5968 belongs to the big headed Dane. The girly wrist is Pam’s. Which means the 5712 belongs to chunky.

I was sent a picture of the group having a good time. i think chunky could take on Mr Olympia.

Haven't lived if you don't take a 40 percent hit at least once.

I’ve had that a few times.
My navitimer, 5524G, the 5930G, the 5196r/j. Come to think of it. It’s really only the patek dress watches that I get hosed on.

Lol

Anybody would look like Mr Olympia sat next to Dane. He looks like a hairy pot bellied chimp.

Interesting, I've never taken a hit on a dress watch, in the past I've had a 3919J, 5015R and 5035R and sold them all at either a small gain (3919) or a fairly sizable one (the other two). Of course, I didn't short-term flip any of those, they were all bought and enjoyed for some time before sold. Between buying aggressively on price (even at AD in my case), and Patek inevitably raising prices over time, you can sometimes mitigate the downside substantially (although admittedly more difficult now that Patek's pricing is already high and stainless rules the market).

Regardless, the bottom line is these things are watches - buy what you like, enjoy it and savor it. There are vastly better investments out there that are also more liquid and more easily traded, if return is the goal.

Yeah I change my mind a lot... that said. I don’t think watches are an investment. Just a hobby. ;)

funny that. i call myself lucky since the only watch i have lost money on was a panarei, my first entry into 'high' end.

That picture is slightly deceiving, makes me look bigger than I am.

Great hobby indeed, and some excellent pieces you've got over there @Fat_ninja. BTW, should you feel the need to take the proverbial hit you mentioned earlier on your 5196-R (or G if you happen to have one of those laying around), please give me a shout :-). In the meantime, all the best to you and yours.

He actually tried to order a bottle of Blue Nun in the restaurant, I had to explain to the Maitre d’ that he was from Kent and that they only drink Carling there.

Couple more pics from our visit to a Patek AD and a vintage dealer.
Vienna is definitely on my list of places to return to with the family.
