I used to think that there were several criteria for foolish investment advice, namely:
Porter Stansbury Suze Orman Winklevoss Twins (Bitcoin) Fisher Cramer Greed & Fear Now I guess I have to add Rolex to that sorry list. |

I spend about as much time on an investing forum as I do here. Nobody there mentioned watches, nobody here should be thinking this is an investment.
I am looking at vanguard lifestrategy, however I have alot of bear in my outlook as the are some big potential problems on the horizon. Anyone's thoughts? |

You know though these threads are almost comical, one needs to consider the new Rolex buyer. These watches are largely unattainable at AD’s, and going for massive premiums over MSRP and have also outpaced inflation by a great deal. I can’t blame the newby for asking these questions as the only way to obtain them is via gray market with the massive mark ups and that is a risky move.

A time machine to buy a Daytona 6263 for $800 in 1980 or a 1986 Explorer II in 1986. Collectable watches are a crap shoot, same with cars. Best investments are securities & commodities people use.

I'm quite new here and I am currently saving up for my 214270. I have a lovely Seiko SKX and a 2018 Seamaster. I love my watches and this new passion. It's a shame seeing people buying watches solely for "investment" purposes. However, its their money and if they think a Batman on a Jubilee is worth £14k, then who am I to moan. You won't be getting much of a good reaction on here though asking about investment opportunities.

I honestly do not think any watch could be investment. Just wear it and if it goes up in value, it is a plus. If not, I have a watch. That's all.

Best investment Rolex currently? Your opinion
Quote:
Welcome to the forum and congrats on your 16713. That was a good choice to save money on the inflated values for ne SS models. Plus you have a new (to you) Rolex to enjoy. As you’ve seen here we have diverse membership - purists do not consider the future value in monetary terms. I respect that. The pragmatic buyer will consider residual future value or potential appreciation. Not a true investment but a practical use of money that can be converted back to currency if a calamity demanded it. The TT residual value won’t grow like SS but the front-end expense is better. Lastly, a wise investor who sees Rolex values solely in terms of actively trading or a buy-hold strategy is not going into watches. There isn’t a good market platform to trade without sky high fees. Better strategy is stick to actively traded instruments. So I don’t attack your question - but your speculations about TT bottoming out, or long term strategy is not a way to weigh the options for adding new timepieces. A well kept Rolex or Patek is going to be the better choice than some other lesser brands. Remember, these only represent a tiny one-tenth of a percent of your net investments. Global economic factors will have a larger influence on your core investments than just one watch model over another. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

The best investment Rolex are generally anything in the Datejust family or lady datejusts, especially smaller sizes.... go get 'em! Might want to consider taking an early disbursement from your 401k to really invest with gusto.

I get a charge out of the people that get all spun up because people on the forum ask questions about Rolex as an investment. None of us (OK, maybe a few) buy these exclusively for investments. I love my Rolex and will probably never sell any of them but these are big expenses for me and, unlike other watches, hold their value. Considering if they will hold their value is a natural thought process, just like home ownership or buying a car. You guys need to relax.

You know it is possible to answer a question like this . Am I interested in these questions? Not really, but it is possible to answer the actual question especially without sounding like a condescending donkey.
This is a watch forum not an investment forum. The person wants to buy a watch. I like guitars, if I wanted to buy a guitar and asked for an opinion on a guitar forum which guitars would be a smart buy and potentially a good investment and the people answered, “guitars aren’t good investments” I would say you missed the point and didn’t answer my question. |

The only person I tell that my watches are ‘investments’ is my wife
She has to wait 50yrs to prove me wrong

If you are trying to buy a watch as an "investment" you don't have enough money.

I’d never consider any watch an investment. But that said I have a couple of things to say about it.
1. Everyone needs to relax or click on when they see these threads. Nothing on TRF is worth getting so upset over, and if it is, like I said just don’t click on the thread, definitely don’t comment as it will just perpetuate said thread and all future threads like it. 2. This is a true passion hobby for me, I grew up with a father that shared the same feelings, but we’re not wealthy people. Any one watch in my dads collection typically cost more than the car he drove my entire life. We have to be a little careful about which watches we buy. Unfortunately and fortunately The main reason I can afford this hobby is because the watches I buy don’t lose much (if any value), in fact most appreciate. Last year I sold several Watches to pay for a new fence and basement renovations in my house. I don’t criticize someone for wanting to buy something that doesn’t take a value dump the second you swipe your card. 3. All that said, I never saw watches as an investment but in terms of liabilities and assets I’ve never owned a watch that was a liability (unless it was under $200). 4. Lastly, the most important part of selecting a watch is that you love it. If you can manage to buy a watch that will hold its value and you absolutely love it, you can never lose! Make sure you love a watch first, then take into consideration other things like future value |

No one knows. Anything can become popular and go nuts on the secondary market so good luck. Me I buy what I like.

A likely reason that some of the older rolexes are so valuable and jumped so much in price is because they made very few of em back then and they are highly sought after. Take those vintage daytonas, they couldn't give those away back then. Then due to limited population and extreme popularity, voila, valuable. Take the prototype steel day-date, there are only 6 of those bad boys out there, with 4 currently accounted for. Same for the Bao Dai or any of those fancy ones John Goldberger has in his safe. Those are worth a fortune because theres so few of them. Now consider your modern rolexes, any one with enough money can buy one or not apparently nowadays, but there are plenty of them. Once upon a time, batmans sat at $7,900 for several bumps and never moved until the mania. But at the same time, if you have enough money, you could've grabbed one. Not saying they're gonna go for peanuts in the future, but don't expect Paul Newman Paul Newman money for a run of the mill Daytona in steel. That hideous tudor military prototype watch now, from 2019 Basel, that may be an investment but in god knows how many years and even then, I wouldn't hold my breath. Wear and enjoy em.
