Soft market on the 5168G-001

Hello Patek fans, the blue 5168g is my first Patek as some of you know. I love this Aquanaut! It is an anniversary piece, the first in white gold, in blue and in 42mm (which the size would normally be on the top big size but given the height of it, it is perfect). It feels so well, wears terrific and the dial is a dream to me. However, I am still so shocked why the market for it is so soft. Sure, it grabs some premium but in comparison with its little Aqua-bros, not even close. Any theories and ideas why? Chrono24 always seem to have 50+ of them on the market. Is there over production on these?

Maybe SS is more durable and 42 is a bit big for some, IDK.

I’d say the 42.2mm case is the main detractor

Even if you could buy one for MSRP less 15% it’s just an aquanaut and there are lots of other options for that money. Not saying it isn’t a nice looking watch but from a grey at 50K plus it isn’t worth it in my opinion.

Soft market. Sounds like you’re equating a watch to the housing market

How is it a bad thing that it’s “easier” to buy this watch? I get speculating on stocks, but watches (and housing) are beyond me.

It's more expensive and less useful than the 5164, that's why the market is soft. Buy what you like though, I own and like both.

Agree w this 100%. Don’t worry about it’s value it’s still limited production and will certainly go up in value once discontinued. In the meantime, just enjoy the watch.

I think it's a great watch and it fits you well. Don't worry about the market.

The spike in prices really is all about the 5711/5712... all the derivative trades cascaded up after which started late 2017. Peaked right about the summer time.

As others have said this is 42mm and WG. The 5167a is the one that probably likely holds better. The 5168 usually don’t have a huge waitlist. Recently. There was also the hype of a 68 behind discontinued.

Nice watch still

The green is hard to get and both 5168’s still are way above list.

Ask is. But try selling one... it’s a different story

You’ll still do ok, if selling is your main priority.

They priced it very high. Still such a beauty, you’re lucky to have one!

I'm surprised they're still selling the blue after releasing the green, but my impression is they're not making many of either. If you're buying at retail, this is a fine longer-term investment.

Bingo. Smaller pool of prospective buyers / less demand

It is a nice watch but as others have said there are three issues: large size, high price, and reduced durability compared to SS.

I am confident that demand for a blue 5167A would outstrip demand for the 5168G many times, but every 5168G brings Patek 2x revenue and >>2x profit compared to selling a 5167A. Good for them...

One might even argue it is a win-win if Aquanaut buyers can get a blue 5168G from the AD after a reasonable wait rather than paying the same amount to a grey for a 5167A. More likely though many people would rather be able to get a 5167A at MSRP, especially if there was a blue version.

I would agree the 42mm size is a bit large and deterrent to some buyers with smaller wrists. I doubt I could wear it. The allure of the Aquanaut to me is its light weight. WG adds a lot of weight and lets you know you have it on. Just what Aquanaut owners seem not to want.
