Icon17 Patek spotting >>>>>

The Patek section also needs its own dedicated thread with celebs and other well known characters wearing Pateks.

Starting off we have Mario Draghi, aka Super Mario, President of the European Central Bank.

It's quite difficult to see but Mario's watch is either YG or RG, so I reckon it's a 5127 - being Italian and an ex Goldman Sachs MD, he'd only wear the ultimate dress watch which is a Calatrava

Continuing with another character from the world of finance we have the American-Hungarian investor George Soros, who also broke the Bank of England in 1992!

With $20bn in the bank, George sure knows how to spend it on quality.

Pic below of George and his 5066A Aquanaut - wonder if George has upgraded to the 5167 but unable to find any recent wrist shots of him.

Three out of four isn't bad, and two have actually gone with a previous version of my 5167.

Still trying to find a picture of George were he may have worn a Patek as well.

He's wearing a Patek Philippe 3970, a vintage yellow gold chronograph with a perpetual calendar.

Here's a picture of the watch (not mine).

Wait what's the difference between 5970 and 5270? Both seem to be perpetual chronos with lunar.

Case

5970: 40mm (available in yellow, white and rose gold)

5270: 41mm (only available in white gold)

Leap Year indicator

5970: Hand

5270: Window

Addition

5270: Day and Night indicator

Movement (more or less sure about the information below, somebody will need to confirm it)

5970: CH 27-70Q (a Lemania movement with the Geneva seal)

5270: CH 29-535 PS Q (in-house movement with the Patek Philippe seal)

I believe that's pretty much it, I'm not sure the 5970 is still in production but perhaps somebody could correct me on that one, it isn't on the website anymore while the 5270 has its spot on the Grandes Complications page. Overall they are similar but one can find a few differences when looking at them.

Here are pictures, please accept my apologies for the hijack!

Thanks a lot, this was very informative. I actually never realized that PP used Lemania movements. I always thought that PP used in-house. I guess they are now getting more and more of their own in the line.

I saw looking at the 5070 last night and noticed the same thing when it was changed to 5170.

Patek Philippe 5270G

The 5970 is not in production anymore--as for me I would take one all day long over a 5270!! To me the 5070P and 5960P are two of the nicest Pateks ever made as well as most sought after as there are so few around--especially the 5070P which was made for less than a year before retirement with around 200 out there.

Yep agree with both of these statement. I too MUCH prefer the way 5970 looks over the 5270.

They used to indeed and are working on having only completely in-house movements. I believe it's the same with the 5070 (a Lemania based movement) v.s. the 5170 (in-house movement), I'll need another confirmation or correction here though...

In the end, it just doesn't really matter to me, they all remain masterpieces!

That's what I thought, I do prefer it myself despite its busier dial (the size and possible case materials are much better to me). As for the 5070, it is a real classic indeed (although the 5170 would probably fit me better).

Correct Carl....There is a reason a 5070J sells for 100% over it's last retail price and the 5170J sells for 25% below. It all comes down to taste but as for collectibility that is a different story and the market tells the story.
