Well said! In the end, the best reason for somebody to buy a watch should always be because he likes it!

And to finish on a good note, here's a picture of the Dalai Lama with his Patek!

If you don't get it, then you don't get it... Literally and figuratively.

I don't understand why anyone would spend $60,000 to $70,000 on a watch that has one name on the case/dial and another on the movement.

I don't see how panic plays a part in in-house versus non-in-house movements. Panic is related to discontinuation and rarity of models, thus inspiring hoarding tendencies in collectors and sellers...

You are free to believe whatever you like. It seems to me that the high-end sellers raise their prices first, and people open their wallets second, at least in this particular collector's market, not the other way around. Likewise, for such a small niche market, companies are much more likely to cater to their buyers desire for in-house movements than roll the dice on manipulating them into buying in-house movements. Patek isn't selling ding dongs.

I think something was lost to you in translation. I said "I think" it is prestigious. I'm not sure why you are twisting my words into something I wasn't saying or suggesting. It isn't clever. Actually, it is quite rude.

I met the Dalai Lama in person and gave him a lime spritzer. I also sat a couple of feet in front of him while he discussed spirituality. Now I have something in common with him besides just the spritzer!

Some things don't have to be HUGE to scream quality - Pateks are one of those things. Is that Katy Perry with Mayer?

Geez guys no one said anything about him needing something huge. But (1) he's a big guy and that watch looks too small on him. It's 38mm. He has other bigger models that look much better. (2) He's wearing casual clothes with a small black dress watch, doesn't go. Replace that with a 5960 and he's good to go. A 5980 even better.

Don't get so worked up. We all know it's a great watch, but I just don't think it works for him in that pic.

And that is Katy Perry.

With all due respect I don't think anybody got worked up with your comment. Everybody should, of course, respect others' opinions regarding watches (as long as the said opinions are written in a respectful way) but people can always kindly disagree with them.

As far as I'm concerned I respect your opinion but I'll have to say that I think this size looks good on his wrist, even with the casual clothes.

No hard feeling to anyone, I'm ok being in the minority on this one.

Maybe a picture of Ken's 5960P or 5980R would make everyone feel better :)

Now that's a thought!

...Along with his 5070P perhaps? What about the 5159?

Indeed! In fact, a famous painter once drew them talking about Patek Philippe watches...

Talk about some epic spotting!

Here's another entry! I don't have pictures of that lady with it but here's the Queen Victoria's Patek Philippe watch!

Same here. There's more to life than oversized sports watches. The GQ style guide says the trend towards "bigger is better" has run its course. A gentleman's watch need not scream "look at me" unless the main focus is on the watch itself. I'm totally on board with this and have lately become enamored by crossover watches (i.e., dress/sport) that are more subtle and have smaller footprints. IMO, they look awesome.
